The Slight Edge
Jeff Olson has a famous theory called The Slight Edge. Jeff says daily disciplines repeated consistently over time add up to the difference between success and failure. His book has been one of the most powerful influences in my life. I have come to realize that rather than spending a lot of time on end goals, I need to work on identifying specific daily actions that keep me moving in the right direction. So rather than naming a million dollar milestone, I remind myself I need to follow my daily marketing checklist and select one best-fit client to onboard each quarter. It’s easy to pull together the support staff needed to mange that clear task and the new work that comes from it. Can I hope to have a million dollar year? Sure. But if I fail to do my daily writing and my weekly networking I won’t get there. It is harder than it sounds. It is just as easy not to do it and there are no immediate repercussions when I let marketing slide. But therein lies the magic of the slight edge. You are either moving up or you are going down. This Skool group is designed to help us be more consistent with marketing and to support participants who want to keep their organization on track with the daily disciplines that will get their team to the next million dollar milestone. Best tip of the day - check out John's Plaud ai watch. John owns an excavation and dredging company and it records his client and contractor meetings throughout the day and has a summary ready when he gets back to the office. Nevin and Theresa are focusing on Inboard Enterprises moving forward (yep, he really is a rocket scientist), but they will still do custom embroidered apparel for us. Logo polos, laptop or log book cases, hats, whatever you need they can do it. Reviewing this month's market research and setting marketing objectives is our next step. We will have a informal check in call at 10 a.m. central time on Wednesday, Oct. 8. Then get serious about blocking off noon Friday, Oct. 31 for a halloween meetup to report big wins from the month and goals for November. We want every one positioned. to launch their best year ever in January. Seeing yourself accurately
If you have been in business any length of time, people have started to define you. Your work has started to define you. Your team, vendors and customers have started to define you. They each see a part, but you are more than that one encounter. You are much more than the work the company did several years ago. If your team expanded or implemented AI tools, your services could be light years ahead of where you were a year ago. Your capabilities may be miles ahead of where you were even a month ago. Growth can be disorienting. People you work with reflect back different images of you. You are far larger than any one individual can see. Responding to client needs or internal crisis, you may even have grown to be more than you realize yourself. If so, you are probably feeling fragmented. This week we are going to be working on defining ourselves by looking at whether the keywords that define us online reflect our current capabilities. The misrepresentation and fragmentation may be frustrating. You may find you feel more comfortable with your older, smaller self. I would like to challenge you to accept what you are becoming. Writing every day on a public platform is frankly terrifying for me. But I have accepted it is what I am meant to do. My old model of partnering with a business owner or marketing manager only lets me reach 5 to 10 organizations. In two weeks on Skool, I’ve already had 10 people sign up to follow the process.
