September Update - Winter 25/26 Season Snowfall Outlook Data
September 5th, 2025 – ECMWF Seasonal Model Update Today’s ECMWF seasonal run keeps the weak La Niña in play a bit longer. Instead of fading quickly, the signal now holds through at least January, with neutral conditions not expected until mid to late February. Here’s what the maps are showing: - Nov–Dec–Jan: Greens light up across northern California and into the Sierra — often a sign of more storm action and a better shot at building early season snowpack. - Jan–Feb–Mar: More green, though a shade lighter. That’s still a positive signal for a full season’s worth of snowfall. Yes, this far out we’re in “fantasy land,” but green is always the color we want to see. Take a look at the ECMWF maps below — green shades mark wetter than normal trends, while brown shades point to drier conditions. September runs are a key checkpoint. If the Sierra stays painted green again in October’s update, confidence builds for a solid and steady winter. For now, it’s encouraging to see the signal lean our way. — Snowman 👉 Follow the Mammoth Weather Story here: https://www.mammothsnowman.com/mammoth-mountain-weather-forecast/
September Update - Winter 25/26 Season Snowfall Outlook Data
La Niña forecasted for early winter 2025-26
Potential bummer for Mammoth this season. Time for everyone to start doing your snow dance. Synopsis from NOAA: ENSO-neutral is most likely through the late Northern Hemisphere summer 2025 (56% chance in August-October). Thereafter, a brief period of La Niña conditions is favored in the fall and early winter 2025-26 before reverting to ENSO-neutral. https://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/analysis_monitoring/enso_advisory/ensodisc.shtml
Mammoth Weather Update - 8-11-25
🎿 Snowman’s take August 11th, 2025 – 9 AM – Good Morning, it’s another lovely day up here in the Eastern Sierra. Air quality remains great with the NW flow keeping the area out of the dissipated smoke to our west. Checking in on conditions at the top of Mammoth Mountain (11,053 feet), the temperature is 53 degrees, with a NNW wind @ 19 mph, gusting to 22 mph. Down at the Main Lodge, the temperature is 58 degrees, and the winds are out of the E at 1 to 3 MPH. A ridge of high presure will keep the Eastern Sierra on the warm side to start this new week. Expect temperatures at the Resort Level (8,900 Feet) to be in the mid to upper 70s, with Mammoth Lakes in the lower 80s and Bishop in the low 100s. Winds will be in the 15-25 range out of the NW over the higher elevations. Expect the next Summer trough to affect the area with cooler temperatures by the weekend.
