The Waiting Cabin - Part 2 ( Dark Finale)
Some of you guys asked for Part 2. So here it is. A bit dark...but cool If you didn't read Part 1, go back and read it. The Waiting Cabin - Part 2 (Finale) -------------------------------------------------------- The decision was already made. We chose to go. We stepped onto the stones in the lake. Up close, they were slick and uneven, darker where the water had already claimed them. The lake pressed in close, soundless, patient. Each step erased the one before it. Halfway across, the shore behind us felt wrong...too far for the few steps we’d taken. The cabin waited. Its door stood open, unchanged. No light inside. No promise. In the lake, the lines of stone thinned as we moved forward. One shifted. Another vanished beneath the surface. The water climbed over our boots, then our legs, stealing the feeling from them faster than fear could arrive. There should have been shouting. There wasn’t. The cold hit once...hard...and then released us. Now, we are inside. The cabin smelled of old wood and cold ash. The floor creaked softly beneath us. A small table stood by the window, bare except for dust and a burned-down candle. The air did not sting. Our clothes did not drip. Outside, the lake was whole again. No stones. No path.... Near the far shore, two shapes lay half in the water, half out, tangled where the current gave up. A boot pointed the wrong way. An arm rested too still for rest. We tried to speak. No sound reached the walls. We waited for pain, for cold, for the body to remember itself. Nothing came. The cabin remained exactly as it had been...quiet, ordinary, indifferent. The crossing had not led us here. It had ended us there. And the cabin, untouched, simply watched, waiting for the next choice to be made....as a whisper drifted through the air: - shall we? (whispering) The End
