No Tangential Only Essential #14
This Tuesday we are going to take a step forward in our speaking journey. Bring three expressions that you like to share and spin a story around them. See you soon!
🇺🇸 English Expressions: On the Wagon / Off the Wagon 🚚🍷
Hey everyone! 👋 Today’s expressions are “on the wagon” and “off the wagon.” 👉 On the wagon means someone has stopped drinking alcohol and is staying sober. 👉 Off the wagon means they started drinking again after trying to quit. It’s most commonly used specifically for alcohol consumption. Origin: This phrase comes from the early 20th century. A “water wagon” was a vehicle that sprayed water on dusty roads. People who chose water instead of alcohol were said to be “on the wagon,” meaning they were staying sober. Over time, it became slang for quitting or relapsing into drinking. 🚰 Examples: • He’s been on the wagon for a year now. 💪 • After the wedding, he went off the wagon again. 🍾 • I’m staying on the wagon this month. 🚫🍷 • I was on the wagon all week, then Friday hit… 😅 • She’s been on the wagon since New Year’s. 🎯 • He went off the wagon during the holiday party. 🎉 Now it’s your turn! 💬 Drop your own sentence using “on the wagon / off the wagon” below 👇 WE LEARN FROM EACH OTHER! 🤝💙
