History time: The Pahlavi script
Many of you may not know but the middle persian language and alphabet was called the Pahlavi language dating back to 2nd century BC. It is derived from the Aramaic alphabet. Pahlavi is the language of Zoroastrian sacred books and its usage stopped with the invasion of arab muslims.
The word Pahlavi means a person from Pahleh, a region known to Romans as "Parthia", aka Persia, aka Iran.
The Pahlavi writing system was the custom of using Aramaic words to represent Pahlavi words. An example is the word for “king,” in Pahlavi shāh, which was consistently written m-l-k after the Aramaic word for “king,” malka, but read as shah. The letters have a vast similarity to Hebrew as well.
So the word Shah itself is in Pahlavi language, and the word Pahlavi itself is as Iranian as it gets!
