And now, here's a list of recognized genocides perpetrated by Muslim-majority regimes or self-proclaimed Islamic states throughout history (focusing on modern examples where possible, as ancient ones are numerous but less relevant to current discussions). These are based on scholarly and international recognitions, including date range, location/regime, targeted group, brief description, and estimated deaths.
1913–1922: Ottoman Empire (modern Turkey) – Greek Genocide – Systematic killings, deportations, and forced marches of Greek Christians – 450,000–750,000 deaths.
1914–1925: Ottoman Empire – Assyrian Genocide – Massacres and deportations of Assyrian Christians – 250,000–750,000 deaths.
1915–1923: Ottoman Empire – Armenian Genocide – Deportations, mass killings, and death marches of Armenian Christians – 800,000–1.5 million deaths.
1933: Kingdom of Iraq – Simele Massacre – Targeted killings of Assyrian Christians – About 3,000 deaths.
1986–1989: Ba'athist Iraq under Saddam Hussein – Anfal Genocide – Chemical attacks, mass executions, and destruction of villages against Kurds – 50,000–182,000 deaths.
2003–present: Sudan (under Omar al-Bashir and successors) – Darfur Genocide – Attacks by Janjaweed militias on non-Arab populations, involving killings, rape, and village burnings – Over 300,000 deaths.
2014–present: Islamic State (ISIS) in Iraq and Syria – Yazidi Genocide – Mass executions, sexual slavery, and forced conversions of Yazidis – About 5,000 deaths, thousands enslaved.
Combined Death Toll from Islamist Atrocities and Genocides (Last 30 Years, Approx. 1995–2025)
Death toll from Islamist terrorist attacks (last ~30 years):
Reliable estimates from think tanks tracking specifically Islamist terrorism put the figure at over 200,000 deaths.
Fondapol (a French research institute) documented at least 210,138 deaths from 48,035 Islamist attacks worldwide between 1979 and May 2021. Adjusting for the lower activity pre-1995 and adding post-2021 incidents (including surges in the Sahel and elsewhere), the total since 1995 exceeds 200,000, with recent updates pushing cumulative figures toward 250,000 in some analyses covering up to 2024–2025.
Death toll from recognized genocides by Muslim-majority regimes or Islamist groups (last 30 years):
The main cases in this period are:
Anfal Genocide (1986–1989, Iraq under Saddam Hussein): 50,000–182,000 Kurds killed (mostly pre-1995, but often included in 30-year windows).
Darfur Genocide (2003–present, Sudan): Over 300,000 deaths.
Yazidi Genocide (2014–present, ISIS): ~5,000 killed (plus thousands enslaved).
Combined for modern cases overlapping the last 30 years: approximately 350,000–500,000 deaths (heavily driven by Darfur; ISIS actions overlap with terrorism counts).
Grand combined estimate: Adding terrorism and these genocidal campaigns yields well over 500,000 deaths attributable to Islamist groups or Muslim-majority regimes in acts of terrorism and genocide over the past 30 years. Note that some overlap exists (e.g., ISIS terrorism counted in both), and many victims were fellow Muslims. These figures come from documented sources like Fondapol, UN reports, and human rights organizations, highlighting the scale while underscoring the hypocrisy of selective outrage.
The overwhelming majority of victims in these atrocities and genocides are Muslims themselves—often fellow Muslims targeted for being the "wrong" kind (e.g., Shia vs. Sunni), insufficiently devout, or simply in the wrong place.
Islamist Terrorist Attacks (Last ~30 Years)
Studies consistently show that 80–97% of victims are Muslims, primarily because most attacks occur in Muslim-majority countries (e.g., Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria, Nigeria, Somalia).
Fondapol (1979–2021): 91.2% of victims were Muslims.
Fondapol updates and other analyses: Around 89.5–90% of attacks in Muslim countries, with victims mainly Muslims.
U.S. National Counter-Terrorism Center (2011 report): 82–97% where religion identifiable.
CSIS and Global Terrorism Database analyses: 83–90% of attacks and deaths in Islamic countries, with the vast majority Muslim victims.
Out of the ~200,000–250,000+ deaths from Islamist terrorism in this period, that means roughly 160,000–240,000+ were Muslims.
Genocides by Muslim-Majority Regimes/Islamist Groups
These are more mixed, but still predominantly Muslim victims:
Darfur (2003–present) — Over 300,000 deaths. Both perpetrators (government/Janjaweed) and victims (non-Arab Darfuris like Fur, Zaghawa, Masalit) are overwhelmingly Muslim. The conflict is ethnic/tribal/resource-based in a Muslim region, so nearly all victims are Muslims.
Yazidi Genocide (ISIS, 2014–present) — ~5,000 killed. Yazidis are a non-Muslim minority (Kurdo-syncretic faith), so these victims are not Muslim (though ISIS killed far more Muslims overall in sectarian attacks).
Anfal (1986–1989, Saddam's Iraq) — 50,000–182,000 Kurds. Most Kurdish victims are Sunni Muslims, so predominantly Muslim.
Overall for the modern genocides in the last 30 years: The vast majority (~350,000–480,000 out of ~350,000–500,000) were Muslims, driven heavily by Darfur and Anfal.
This underscores the brutal irony: Islamist extremists and regimes inflict the most suffering on Muslim populations—through sectarianism, takfir (declaring other Muslims apostates), power struggles, or ethnic cleansing in Muslim lands—while often framing their violence as defending Islam.
The hypocrisy of criticising Israel (or the West) but staying silent on this massive intra-Muslim bloodshed is glaring.
