Charles Schwab Checking Account Guide
The Schwab Bank High Yield Investor Checking® Account offered by Charles Schwab is a stand-alone U.S. bank account, not merely a feature inside a brokerage platform. Although it is typically linked to a Schwab brokerage account, the checking account itself is issued by Schwab Bank, making it a true U.S. checking account rather than a brokerage cash balance.
One of its notable features is support for Zelle, and the debit card issued with the account provides unlimited ATM fee reimbursement worldwide.
Another useful feature of the Schwab setup is that the linked brokerage account can act as an international funding gateway. https://international.schwab.com/resource/instructions-to-transfer-money-to-your-schwab-account
For example, if I transfer HKD to the Citibank HK account they provide—including my name and account number in the reference—the funds are typically credited directly to my account in USD within 12 hours. It is extremely convenient. After that I can transfer the USD to the checking account.
Below are two common methods to open a Schwab checking account.
Method 1 — Convert an Existing Schwab International Brokerage Account
If you already have a Schwab International brokerage account, you can convert it into a U.S. domestic Schwab account, which then allows you to apply for the checking account online.
Steps:
  1. Log in to your Schwab account and go to Account Settings.
  2. Attempt to change your address to a U.S. address.
  3. The system will show a notice stating that U.S. addresses cannot be changed online and will provide a form for address update requests.
  4. Download and complete the form.
  5. Attach the following documents: ITIN CP565, proof of US address
  6. Send the form and documents to Schwab through Secure Message.
  7. After approximately one week, your account may be converted to a U.S. Schwab account.
Once the conversion is complete, you can apply for the Schwab checking account online:
Method 2 — Open Brokerage + Checking Account via Fax (No Existing Account)
If you do not currently have any Schwab account, you can open both the Schwab brokerage account and the checking account simultaneously by submitting the account application via fax, fax number is on the form.
The online system don't accept ITIN
Application form:
Recommended documents to include when faxing:
  • Passport copy
  • ITIN CP565 letter
  • Proof of U.S. address
Submitting these documents together increases the likelihood that the application will be processed smoothly.
Important Recommendation (For Non-U.S. Residents)
If you successfully open a Schwab checking account, it is generally recommended to avoid using the linked brokerage account for trading, especially if you are not a U.S. tax resident.
When your account is converted to a U.S. Schwab account, the system typically auto complete a Form W-9 instead of Form W-8BEN. It may lead to tax issues.
However, simply using the Schwab checking account itself generally does not create issues.
