October's Must-See Financial Events: FOMC Meeting, OpenAI DevDay, Nvidia GTC Conference, and More
The third quarter of this year is drawing to a close. The U.S. stock market may break through the 'infamous September,' as major U.S. indices have continuously hit record highs during the month, though some adjustments have been observed in recent days.
Looking ahead to October, investors will face a new earnings season for U.S. stocks, the Federal Reserve’s interest rate policy decision, OpenAI DevDay, and $NVIDIA (NVDA.US)$ GTC conference, along with a series of key economic indicators.
● The U.S. Senate Finance Committee has confirmed an Oct. 1 hearing to examine the taxation of crypto assets.
The hearing comes amid ongoing debate over how crypto assets should be taxed. In July, pro-crypto Senator Cynthia Lummis introduced legislation seeking to update the tax code for crypto assets, arguing that existing rules are outdated and stifle innovation.
Also in July, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the Trump administration still supports de minimis tax exemptions for crypto transactions in future legislation.
• The September Non-farm payrolls and unemployment rate will be released on October 3 at 8:30 am. Non-farm payrolls increased by just 22,000 in August, significantly lower than the 75,000 forecast, while the unemployment rate rose to 4.3%.
• On October 6, OpenAI will host its biggest developer event yet in San Francisco to explore what’s new, what’s possible, and what’s next with AI.
This year, OpenAI will bring together more than 1,500 developers for DevDay. Speakers will include Sam Altman, Chief Executive Officer, Greg Brockman, President, and many more to come.
• On October 14th, the four major investment banks— $Citigroup (C.US)$, $Goldman Sachs (GS.US)$, $JPMorgan (JPM.US)$, and $Wells Fargo & Co (WFC.US)$—will release their earnings before the U.S. stock market opens, marking the beginning of a new earnings season.
• The Federal Reserve Board will host a conference on payments innovation on October 21, with a focus on emerging technologies in U.S. payment systems.
The conference will feature panel discussions on the convergence of traditional and decentralized finance, new stablecoin use cases, the intersection of artificial intelligence and payments, and the tokenization of financial products and services.
"Innovation has been a constant in payments to meet the changing needs of consumers and businesses," Federal Reserve Governor Christopher J. Waller said in a statement.
The conference is positioned to bring together “ideas on how to improve the safety and efficiency of payments, and hearing from those helping to shape the future of payments,” Governor Waller added.
• On October 21 after the market closes, tech giant $Netflix (NFLX.US)$ will release its earnings.
• On October 28 at 12:00 PM ET, Jensen Huang will deliver a keynote speech at the $NVIDIA (NVDA.US)$ GTC in Washington D.C. The conference features powerful insights from experts in over 70 sessions, live demos, and hands-on workshops covering everything from physical AI and agentic AI to remote sensing, high-performance computing, and quantum computing.
On October 29th, the Federal Reserve will announce the interest rate decision for October. In September, the Federal Reserve announced a 25-basis-point interest rate cut, the first in nine months. Market participants widely expect the Fed to implement another 25-basis-point rate cut in October.
According to Goldman Sachs, the FOMC’s risk management framework currently reflects a cautious stance, with communications from many members indicating that policy needs to shift toward a more accommodative direction.
Additionally, a series of significant economic data will be released in October, including the ADP employment Change, Producer Price Index (PPI), Consumer Price Index (CPI), monthly retail sales, and PCE data. Investors should pay close attention.
