Thought for today: People misidentify themselves with something they are not.
Fear is not considered a natural or desirable state. Instead, the ideal quality is abhaya, or fearlessness. Fear is described as a mental disturbance—anxiety that can affect both the mind and body.
According to this view, fear arises from misidentification and attachment. When people wrongly identify themselves with temporary things—such as the body, possessions, or social roles—they become attached to them. This attachment creates fear, because they worry about losing what they think defines them. True fearlessness comes from understanding one’s deeper, spiritual identity beyond these temporary conditions.
Fear is not a part of Vedic wisdom – abhaya (fearlessness) is part of Vedic Wisdom. Everyone should develop the quality of abhaya. If we analyse what fear is, we can see that it is anxiety in the mind. It goes to the nervous system, goes to the heart – it can even kill you. You can become so afraid that you can actually die of fear.
Where does it come from? Why are we afraid? Because of misidentification and attachment. People misidentify themselves with something they are not.
