God’s design
Genesis 2:18 is one of the most misunderstood verses in Scripture.
Most translations say:
“I will make a helper suitable for him.”
And somehow that got turned into “assistant,” “sidekick,” or “support role.”
But that’s not what the Hebrew says.
Not even close.
The word “helper” is ezer — the same word used to describe God Himself as our help, our rescuer, our strength.
This isn’t weakness.
This is power.
And the phrase “suitable for him” is kenegdo — meaning
equal to, corresponding to, face-to-face, opposite yet aligned.
In other words…
God wasn’t saying,
“I’ll make someone to assist him.”
He was saying,
“I’ll make a strong counterpart — equal in strength — who can stand with him in the assignment.”
This is also the first time in creation God says something is “not good.”
Not because Adam failed.
Not because he lacked purpose.
But because the assignment was never meant to be carried alone.
Genesis 2:18 isn’t about romance.
It’s about design.
Marriage wasn’t created as a hierarchy.
It was created as a team.
Two people.
Different strengths.
Same mission.
Standing face-to-face.
Carrying weight together.
That’s not modern thinking.
That’s ancient truth.
