Engaging Warm-ups
Warm-ups are essential before practice and training for a few reasons, but they are often done wrong.
Warm-ups include the following:
  1. Warm up the body (most obvious reason)
  2. Prepare the body for demands seen in the sport
  3. Mentally prepare/engage athlete
I see #2 and #3 either done wrong or skipped in most training or practices. A light jog does not prepare the body for the demands of basketball, nor does it mentally prepare and engage athletes.
Personally, I love to get the body moving for 1-2 minutes, then hit some Isometrics to prepare the muscles and tendons for the demands of basketball (tons of deceleration, stopping, and accelerating), then some partner warm-up series where we start to compete with each other and engage the mind.
How do you guys prepare your athletes? What are some fun warm-ups you can share?
