People don't know how to self promote, and as a consequence of that, they just annoy others and get baned from spaces.
Here is how to do it the right way.
PS: I made this post about how to self promote with the classifieds, but this one is more broad to include strategies for multiple platforms. This is a sequential step by step on how to grow through content marketing in different places without being annoying and geting baned:
- Know where your audience is. Search for groups that are relevant for your niche, where people are asking questions about the subject you master. Give great answers to the questions people make and repurpose those answers for content that is relevant and high quality. I talk more about that here.
- Use that content to promote yourself in different groups and platforms. You don't need to spend a lot of time doing that. If you put effort into the answers you give helping people, that help will already be great content for several communities and social media spaces. Just copy/paste and add some stuff to give context for the problem.
- Follow the structure: Eye cathing hook in the title --> informative text that makes people want to continue reading -> CTA at the end, if allowed (Call To Action - requesting people to pay for your services, join your communities, subscribe to you).
- Be careful with CTAs. Each place will have a different rule regarding that, with many outright prohibiting you from using them. Read the rules of the place you're at and see if linking peoople for your own stuff is allowed. If it's not, just contribute with high quality content and wait for people to reach out to you.
- Be consistent without being annoying. People will hate your brand if it just annoys them. Provide something different and valuable each time and give it a rest. Posting more than once a day in the same place might make people tired of you if you don't have a great reputation there yet.
- At the beggining, look for feedback. Be humble, get opinions, figure out how people perceive your brand, gather feedback, reinvent and improve your message. Your first ideas will problably not work as well as you want. People need to have a very clear idea of what you're offering and want that for them. You grow by giving what people want, not what they need.
- Don't brag. Bragging smells like scam. If your hook is something like "I made 1000 dollars in one month. Click here to find out how" you will automatically get flaged as a scammer for everyone that is not new to the internet. Use a hook that really translates what you're offering in a clear and honest way, but at the same time catching people's attention. Don't make extravagant promisses that you can't fulfill and don't be vague about what you do.
- Only DM people if they reached out to you first. Like if they answered on your post or joined your community. And even than, only do it if you really feel like it's necessary and that you can really help them. In most places if you send unsolicited DMs, you get baned. The best thing is to help people so much that they will want to DM you themselves to get more out of you.
- Be patient. It takes time to get where you want to go. Even being very consistent, it will take a while for you to stop talking to yourself. People might need to see you more than once to be convinced, but don't push it. Just prove that you're worth their time. In the meantime continue focusing on step 1, helping people in different places.
