This might be a strange post to see from someone who founded a group devoted to letting go of excess weight!
Here’s the thing…fat is not bad.
It’s not good either.
Fat is fuel.
Fat only becomes bad if we store too much of it and never use it.
Not having enough fat is also problematic.
Wood is fuel too.
Too much wood can create fire danger.
Not enough wood and we can’t make a fire to keep ourselves warm.
Is wood bad? Is it good? Wood is FUEL too, just like fat.
I invite you to create your own Ode to Fat.
Think about the ways that fat has served you in your life…how has it benefitted you?
If you’re ready to work together with fat as fuel, to support your body in a different, more optimal way than you have in the past, in 2026, include that too in your Ode to Fat.
An interesting psychological pattern happens when we hate something or when we resist it. The thing we resist tends to follow us around, or at least it can feel that way.
An example- some Peace Corps friends and I rescued a bunch of puppies from a dumpster. I adopted one of them, Mira, and often played with her off leash with some of the neighborhood kids.
Mira ALWAYS honed in on and followed the ONE neighbor who hated puppies and was terrified of them…she never went after anyone else, just that one neighbor.
Ironically, letting go of fear and fully accepting something you resist or don’t like, even appreciating it, can sometimes make it easier to change your relationship with it, and maybe even part ways with it when necessary.
Let’s give it a go!
Share your insights/poems/odes to fat in the comments below. I’m excited to hear what you come up with!
Here’s mine…
Dear Fat,
I appreciate you. Thank you for being a wonderful source of energy for me, especially during times of fasting and exercise. Thank you for giving me curves that I love. Thank you for protecting my organs from toxins in the environment, insulating me from the cold, and working together with muscle to keep my skin taut and healthy.
Thank you for being a health warning signal for me. You showed me when insulin resistance was wreaking havoc on my body. When I saw you piling up more and more, clinging to me for dear life, and not willing to let go no matter what I did, it showed me that something was off. Learning about insulin resistance and creating metabolic flexibility has been a game changer for me, and you were a big part of that! Thank you.
I’m excited to keep working with you to create ketones during times of fasting and exercise, optimize clear thinking, and support great energy, health and vitality. I will do my best to continue to love this body and all its components, to take care of it as best as I can, and to listen to the messages you have for me. You are an awesome partner and teacher.
Thank you, Fat.
