Crossbows & Archery Seasons
This is always the elephant in the room when it comes to archery seasons, and I’m gonna say right away that a lot of you followed me know that I’m not against crossbows per se, but I do not believe they belong in conventional archery seasons for the reasons I’ve listed below. I was asked to write a short treatise for a large organization on my opinion of crossbows why simply because I saw the creation of the laws in Ontario in the 70s for archery only seasons, and I saw those seasons created and allowed in the very beginning simply because of the constraints and the difficulty required, whether with a compound recurve or longbow to hunt effectively for any game you had to get close it wasn’t the weapons inefficiency. It was its range and its distance and the competency required to be effective with them! Read below and fill your comments in. Cheers! Grant In the mid 70s here in Ontario- my father and his associates of the then Ontario Bowhunters association finally convinced the province and the wildlife Enforcement Branch/management branch to look at archery only seasons, and there were some fairly strict parameters apart from the obvious poundage/ equip limitations. The argument that won the day was simply that archery seasons were longer because it was more difficult to hunt with the weapon (and be successful) what they called at the time primitive weapon seasons. This was entirely based on a very specific skill set in having to get close because of the weapons range and effectiveness, it was just more difficult. It was never meant to be the easy way or the sure way. The BowHunter needed to get close - much closer than other weapon systems to be effective. Of course the compound is started surfacing around that time, but of course the compound was a much more basic compound than the compounds-the wheel bows produced today let off speed - sights etc. etc. crossbows were somewhat prevalent but nowhere near as much as they are today.. the problem across the board we have in the hunting community now is that technology rules the day essentially based all around success, and of course, the profit margin of those companies pushing success..
🔥THE 7-DAY INSTINCTIVE SHOT CHALLENGE - starts today!
Here's the deal... One task per day for the next 7 days. No fancy targets. No judge but yourself. Just you, your bow, and the process. HOW TO POST EACH DAY: When you complete your daily task, post in the comments below and start your post with your day number so everyone, including me knows where you're at. Example: "Day 2: 3 arrows at the 3D target. Two hits, one miss. Felt good on the follow-through." Include a photo or video of the task. Hits and misses welcome. This is about accountability, not perfection. (Veteran move is to use your audio to text button!) If you miss a day, jump back in on the current day. Don't wait. Don't restart. Just pick up where the group is. 🔥THE 7-DAY INSTINCTIVE SHOT CHALLENGE: Day 1: The Warm Up Shot Shooting for groups of 3 for a total of 12 arrows only at a blank bale. No target face. Focus only on your anchor point and follow-through. Do not pace off distance. Do not worry about where your arrows hit or your groups. Post: A photo of your setup (bow, bale, you at it). Day 2: Accountability Shot 3D or field target, unknown distance. No pacing. Shoot instinctive - do not aim. Post: Your result - hits and misses welcome. Shoot only 3 arrows, pull each one before the next. No groups. Day 3: The Hunting Shot Shoot from your knees. Five arrows. Don't worry about distance, range, or groups. Post: What did you feel hitting your anchor? Focus on consistency. Day 4: The Low Light Shot Last 20 minutes before dark. Five arrows. Close your eyes for 30 seconds before each shot. Shoot as far as you're comfortable - no range finding, no assistance. Change your shooting position every arrow. Post: What you saw - or couldn't see. Day 5: The Full Kit Shot Shoot in your hunting gear. Jacket, boots, whatever you'd wear in the field. Three arrows. Shoot from any position. Post: What did you notice different? (Draw length? Clearance? Range of motion?) Day 6: The One Shot, One Arrow One arrow Shot One arrow at a spot you've never shot from before. New angle. New distance. Commit. Shoot only one arrow. Keep your bow up for at least 30 seconds after the shot. Focus on follow-through.
