Real question for the bros: how much experience does it take to really understand fragrances? Not just “I like it / I don’t like it,” but like… getting notes, structure, quality, and being able to describe stuff accurately.
Rough timeline (just a general guide):
- 0–30 scents (a few weeks–couple months): learning basics + what you naturally gravitate toward
- 30–100 (few months–~1 year): things start clicking—families, common notes, “this smells synthetic/this smells quality.”
- 100–300 (~1–3 years depending on how active): you start speaking the language—structures, styles, materials, and better descriptions
- 300+ + lots of re-wears: deeper level—nuance, weather/skin differences, concentration, reformulations, perfumer styles
What made it click for you personally? Decants/samples, side-by-sides, wearing in different weather, note training—whatever helped you level up fastest.
