Think your daily Diet Coke is harmless because it contains no sugar and no calories?
It’s time to look beyond the nutrition label.
For decades, we’ve been conditioned to believe that if something contains zero calories, it must be a healthier choice.
But your body is not a calculator. It’s a complex biological system, and what you consume can influence far more than your daily calorie count.
Let’s talk about your liver.
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), now commonly called metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), involves excess fat accumulating in the liver and is closely connected to metabolic health.
And researchers are investigating whether artificially sweetened beverages may contribute to the problem.
🔬 WHAT DOES THE RESEARCH SHOW?
A 2023 study using UK Biobank data found that higher consumption of artificially sweetened beverages was associated with an increased risk of fatty liver disease, including a greater likelihood of hospitalization for the condition.
Other studies have produced mixed results, so this does not establish that diet soda causes fatty liver disease.
But it raises questions worth exploring.
Here’s what concerns me from a functional nutrition perspective:
🦠GUT MICROBIOME: Certain artificial sweeteners may alter gut microbial communities, potentially influencing metabolic signaling.
🩸 INSULIN SENSITIVITY: Researchers are exploring whether some sweeteners influence glucose regulation and insulin responses, although effects vary by sweetener and individual.
🧬 LIVER METABOLISM: The relationship between artificial sweeteners, metabolic health, and liver fat accumulation deserves further investigation.
⚖️ WEIGHT ISN’T THE WHOLE STORY: Liver health involves insulin resistance, visceral fat, genetics, dietary patterns, and metabolic function. A number on the scale doesn’t tell the entire story.
MY PERSPECTIVE?
I don’t believe we should evaluate food and beverages solely by their calories.
I care about how they interact with the body.
How do they influence our metabolic health? Our gut? Our hunger signals? Our long-term well-being?
And perhaps most importantly, are we nourishing the body or simply finding ways to satisfy a craving without consuming calories?
🌿 THE ROOTED FAITH/ BEDROCK APPROACH
You don’t need to replace regular soda with a laboratory-created imitation to make a healthier choice.
Try:
đź’§ Sparkling mineral water with fresh lime or lemon.
🍓 Carbonated water infused with berries or cucumber.
🧂 A quality electrolyte like SALTT mixed with still or sparkling water.
🌱 Plain water with fresh mint or citrus.
Simple ingredients. Intentional choices. Less dependence on hyper-sweetened beverages.
The goal isn’t just to consume fewer calories. It’s to support better biological function.
Because zero calories doesn’t automatically mean optimal nourishment.
🌿 Rooted in Faith. Powered by Nature.
Restore the Signals. The Body Does the Rest.
