DAY 1 DISCUSSION: Did You Start a Bakery or Just Start Selling?
Welcome to our first Bakery Business Lab discussion! If you've completed Day 1 of "You Started a Bakery. Now What?", you've probably started thinking about your business a little differently. Now I want to hear from you! First, how did your bakery actually begin? Did you have a business plan? Or did someone tell you your desserts were amazing and you should start selling them? Second, what's ONE thing you want your bakery to accomplish in the next 12 months? It doesn't have to be a huge goal. It just needs to be YOUR goal. And if you're comfortable sharing, tell us what's currently standing in your way. Remember, we're not here to compete with one another. We're here to learn from each other's experiences and build better businesses together. I'll be reading your responses and jumping into the conversations! Haven't completed Day 1 yet? Head to Classroom → Bakery Marketing & Sales → You Started a Bakery. Now What? to get started. The entire series is FREE!
DAY 4 BUSINESS LAB: Where Are Your Customers Coming From?
Welcome back to the Bakery Business Lab! Today's lesson in our FREE 5-day business planning series tackles something I see SO many home bakers struggling with. You know how to MAKE your desserts. But do you have an actual plan to SELL them? Because posting pictures, sharing your menu, and hoping someone places an order isn't really a sales strategy. And neither is waiting for word of mouth to magically bring in customers! A great product doesn't automatically create sales. You need to know WHO you're trying to reach, WHERE to find them, and HOW to give them a reason to buy. That's what we're working on today! LET'S PUT DAY 4 INTO PRACTICE! I want you to think about your current marketing efforts and answer a few questions. 1. Where are most of your customers actually coming from? Facebook? Instagram? Word of mouth? Farmers markets? Local businesses? Repeat customers? If you haven't started selling yet, where do you PLAN to find your first customers? 2. What are you currently doing to actively attract NEW customers? And be honest! Are you following an actual strategy, or are you mostly posting desserts and hoping someone orders? 3. What are you doing to encourage customers to come BACK? Do you have a repeat-customer strategy? Or are you relying on them to remember you the next time they want dessert? TODAY'S BUSINESS DECISION: Choose TWO specific ways you're going to actively attract new customers and ONE way you're going to encourage repeat purchases. Then take ONE action toward putting that plan into practice TODAY. It doesn't have to be complicated! Maybe you'll reach out to a local business, create a post that speaks directly to your ideal customer, or develop a recurring preorder opportunity. The important thing is that you're doing something intentionally, not just waiting for orders to happen. NOW LET'S HELP EACH OTHER! This is where I really want everyone to participate. If you've found a customer acquisition strategy that's worked well for your bakery, SHARE IT!
DAY 2 BUSINESS LAB: Who Are You REALLY Selling To?
Welcome back to the Bakery Business Lab! Today's lesson in our FREE 5-day business planning series is all about identifying your target customers. And here's something I really want you to think about... Just because someone LOVES your desserts doesn't mean they're going to BUY them. We've all had those people who comment "OMG, I need these!" on every single post but never actually place an order. That's because liking something and having a REASON to purchase it are two very different things! And understanding that difference can completely change the way you market your bakery. LET'S PUT TODAY'S LESSON INTO PRACTICE! I want you to answer a few questions: 1. Who have you been trying to sell to? Be specific! "Anyone who likes sweets" doesn't count! 2. Who is ACTUALLY buying from you? If you're already in business, think about your real customers. Are they busy parents? Teachers? Businesses? People buying gifts? Customers treating themselves? Have you noticed any patterns? 3. What's ONE customer group you think you should focus more attention on? And more importantly, WHY? If you haven't opened your bakery yet, tell us who you're considering selling to and what makes you think they'd be interested. HERE'S WHERE WE HELP EACH OTHER! If you see someone mention a customer group you've had success selling to, jump into the conversation! Share what's worked for you. Maybe you've discovered a great way to reach corporate customers. Maybe you've had success with teacher appreciation gifts or birthday party packages. Your experience could help another baker discover an opportunity they've never considered! And don't be afraid to ask questions! TODAY'S BUSINESS DECISION: Choose ONE customer group you're going to focus on learning more about. You don't have to change your entire menu or marketing strategy today. Just identify where you believe your best opportunity might be. Remember, we're not just collecting information in this series. We're making actual decisions that can help us build better businesses!
DAY 5 BUSINESS LAB: Let's Put It All Together!
We've made it to the FINAL DAY of our 5-day Bakery Business Planning Series! Over the last five days, we've talked about something I believe every home baker needs to understand: Knowing how to BAKE and knowing how to run a BAKERY are two very different things! We've covered: - Day 1: Setting goals and understanding why you need a business plan. - Day 2: Identifying WHO you're actually selling to. - Day 3: Understanding your numbers and why sales don't equal profit. - Day 4: Developing a strategy to actually GET customers. - Day 5: Putting everything together into a working business plan. But here's the thing... None of this matters if you don't DO something with what you've learned. And that's what today's Business Lab is all about! TODAY'S CHALLENGE: TURN YOUR PLAN INTO ACTION! I want you to go back through the decisions you've made over the last five days. Look at your goals, your customers, your pricing, your marketing, and how you plan to operate your bakery. Now ask yourself: 1. What was your biggest realization this week? Did you discover that you weren't accounting for all your expenses? That you've been marketing to everyone instead of focusing on your actual buyers? That you don't have a reliable strategy for bringing in customers? Or maybe you realized you've been running your bakery without any measurable goals at all. 2. What's ONE thing you know you need to change? Not five things. Not everything at once. What's the ONE change that could make the biggest difference in your business right now? 3. What's your first step, and WHEN are you going to take it? Be specific! Instead of "I need to improve my marketing," try: "By Monday, I'm going to identify three local businesses I can approach about dessert packages." Instead of "I need to fix my pricing," try: "This weekend, I'm going to calculate the actual cost and production time of my three bestselling products." LET'S MAKE THIS OUR FINAL BUSINESS LAB DISCUSSION! In the comments, finish these three statements:

DAY 3 BUSINESS LAB: Are You Actually Making Money?
Welcome back to the Bakery Business Lab! Today's lesson in our FREE 5-day business planning series is all about something EVERY home baker needs to understand. SALES ARE NOT PROFIT! You can have a completely booked weekend, sell hundreds of dollars in desserts, and STILL walk away with very little money for yourself. Why? Because ingredients, packaging, supplies, overhead, and your TIME all have a cost! And if you're only looking at how much money came in, you're missing a pretty important part of the picture. LET'S PUT TODAY'S LESSON INTO PRACTICE! I want you to think about a product you currently sell (or plan to sell). 1. What are you charging for it? 2. Do you know what it ACTUALLY costs you to make it? Not just ingredients! Think packaging, fees, supplies, and other expenses. 3. How much time are you spending producing it? And here's the BIG question... 4. After looking at those numbers, is this product really as profitable as you thought? You don't have to share your actual financial numbers if you're not comfortable! But I DO want you to share what you discovered. Maybe you realized your packaging is eating into your profits. Maybe you discovered you're spending three hours on something that's barely paying you for one. Or maybe you realized one of your simplest products is actually one of your best money-makers! TODAY'S BUSINESS DECISION: Identify ONE thing you need to change, investigate, or start tracking to improve your bakery's profitability. It could be your pricing, production process, product selection, or even how you're recording expenses. You don't have to overhaul your entire business today. Just make one intentional decision based on what you've learned. AND HERE'S WHERE WE HELP EACH OTHER! If you've found ways to reduce production time, minimize waste, improve your pricing process, or track expenses more effectively, SHARE THEM! Someone else might be struggling with the exact problem you've already figured out. And if you're stuck on a calculation or aren't sure how to account for an expense, ASK!
