Recurring character?

I’m working on a children’s book series about emotions and would love some input.

My first book, Sadness Is Here, is almost ready to be published, and I already have the text written for Anger Is Here and Happiness Is Here.

Originally I planned to use a different child in each book, but now I’m wondering if I should keep the same main character across the whole series.

I also have an amazing illustrator, which is part of what’s making me pause — if I go with a recurring character and for some reason can’t work with her down the road, I’m not sure how that would affect consistency across the series.

For those of you who write or read in this space — what do you think works better? A recurring character or different characters for each story? And has anyone dealt with illustrator changes in a series?
