Last Thursday, Anthropic published something unusual for an AI lab: A proposal for global coordination to slow down or temporarily suspend the development of frontier AI.
Their argument?
Societal structures, governments, and alignment research can no longer keep up with the pace of progress.
The internal numbers they shared are staggering:
→ Engineer productivity multiplied by 8
→ 80% of Anthropic's code is now written by Claude
→ Claude optimizes code 52× faster than a human
This is what's called recursive self-improvement: an AI becoming capable of training its own successors faster, with less human input. A loop that feeds itself.
Anthropic isn't calling for a unilateral stop.
They want a coordinated global framework like nuclear arms treaties so no player benefits from someone else pausing.
