How to move up in the welding industry FAST
I started doing weld repairs at a mechanic shop when I was 16, never touched a TIG torch until then. (Picture of my first practice welds there) I bought a 1971 synchrowave 300 for my home garage to start practicing, best move I ever made. Got another job doing heavy equipment repair, no TIG :( Got a new job fresh out of high school at an aerospace contractor, I did sheet metal forming for months before they let me weld but then I kicked ass and got my aerospace d17.1 X-Ray cert on .021 stainless. Then I quit and started working for myself (jumped the gun but turned out ok) I learned a lot from that and after a year got a job welding for Lockheed martin. Now i’m just building my skills and my portfolio before I re-launch the business with everything that I have learned. My tips for moving up fast! 1:Ask stupid questions, better safe than sorry. If you have a question just ask, a good employer will be glad you asked. It’s called diligence! 2: Practice at home, I didn’t go to welding school, I got almost all my practice at home watching youtube videos and googling the science behind what I was doing. Spend money on some material and equipment I guarantee you’ll spend less than a welding school would cost. 3: Attention to detail! Pay attention to every little thing your co workers that are better than you do, ask them how they do it, look up how to do it, be meticulous when you do it. One of the best ways to get good at welding is to look at every weld you do and scrutinize it down to every little inconsistency and attempt to fix that on the next weld and the next weld until you do. 4: Apply to better jobs constantly, if you can get a better job that aligns with your goals better and pays more, take it and keep applying until you get into the right spot!
