Attention!
When a horse is fully engaged, it significantly enhances a training session. Similar to a child who is attentive in school, they are more receptive to instruction and can respond to subtle cues. You can no less and achieve more. Distraction is a key factor in horses not responding promptly to cues. Once we have a horse focused and waiting for instruction, we can adopt a more connected, subtle approach. An attentive horse can detect subtle cues, which may give the impression that they are anticipating instructions. However, they are actually responding to our energy and body. Studies have shown that our bodies react 100 ms before we have a conscious thought, rendering our energy and nonverbal cues more potent than physical instructions. A distracted horse will seem ignorant, heavy and you’ll have to be loud. None of that is fun, so getting their attention before anything else is key to a session that feels good - for you and the horse.

Yes!!! My mare Ariel is easily upset when you take her away from her herd. This has been a challenge over the years for her and I but once we found what mostly works, communication has increased 10 fold!
Passion with a capitol P
There’s one thing that generally stays strong even if we are dealing with self talk and fear. The passion for our horses is the one thing that keeps us coming back and it can be said for many that it even overrides sanity 😂 But passion comes from within. It’s always there niggling away at us. Motivation on the other hand is most often created from an outside force, and it can wain. It’s fine to lose motivation. It comes back when we find something that inspires us. But passion never leaves.

Ground tying
Can you please do a video/lesson on how to start training the ground tie?

I start with backing, getting them softly backing straight with no fight or flight and establishing that leadership. Then I’ll go to putting the rope down and starting walking away little distances at a time gradually increasing them if the horse moves we go back to backing up. It’s backing with a purpose though and we do change direction. If they get stuck I start with soft taps and build them by the third tap it should be big and they should be allowed to move backwards without restraint but not letting go of the rope if they get there which they will at first. Slower the better!
