Soft Hands
Those of you who have had horsemanship lessons, I’m sure you have heard the term soft feel and soft hands before. There’s a huge misunderstanding though, that soft hands are not solid. They are very solid when it comes to holding - when a horse has resistance you’ll see many people pull, but the key is to hold - like a solid tree trunk in the ground. No give, but no take either - it’s a hold. Firm, without fight - just hold. But when the horse gives we must soften, slow down and give A LOT. it’s a tough concept to get your head around - so later this week I’ll launch the soft hands course. 6 really good exercises for you and your horse to soften and build the lightness that feels like magic. At half the price of a lesson and lifetime access it’s a great way to start the new year!

Changing the game
Putting a horse into a new environment is just part of them growing up. Taking them out is as important as getting the training on them. But remember not to overwhelm them. A new environment is pressure enough on day 1. Just let them draw with that, but also don’t baby them. Once they have done a trip or two it’s time to up the anti with a little training in a new place. Growing their experience grows their mind, bravery and makes for happier horses. Taking young horses on adventures is good for them, but also you! Become brave with them, be proud of them and grow a relationship together.

Kicking out
Hi Eliza question, with my new horse Artimas he likes to kick out with both back feet at one of my horses especially at dinner time which courses a bit of a problem, is there a way that i can influence him so the kicking out is not the most desirable behaviour ??

Protecting food is natural for horses but as you say it’s not ideal, so yes you can help make it undesirable. Do it in a training situation, not at feed time to start with. To begin with get your hindquarter yield really good, to a point where you look or point and he faces up, yielding his hind away. Then get really good at moving the shoulders - this pushes the weight onto the hind - so they can’t engage it. All of this gives you control over where his feet are. Now introduce ropes on the front and hind legs. Just looped around, not tied on. And ask the horse to give to pressure. Be cautious with the back feet, long ropes required, and you’ll need to hold until the kicking stops. Once this is easy for them it’s time to introduce a sideline - and this stop the kicking. After a few sessions of sidelines you can introduce feed - all horses tied up, so it’s controlled - but near enough that the kicking horse will be bothered and try to protect himself. He’s quickly learn to threaten but not kick, which is fine. Hope this help, and remember to stay safe

There’s no one helping me..
Some of the biggest struggles come from pointing the finger at the problems and focussing on the pain but how do we stop that habit - it’s easier said than done. But one simple way is to create a character (a vision if you like) for your ego. Really see that version of you as someone else. Then rather than blaming them or pointing the finger, you can have conversations with them. This gives you power, understanding and a tool to use to find out things about yourself you may never have realised. #cowgirlsmindset
