Opening Day!
I was lucky enough to be here on opening day -- my first opening day at Mammoth! As @Steve Taylor said, it was low tide in some areas but the coverage was far better than I expected. I was surprised to see the face of Chair 3 was open with some nice packed powder. Too bad they couldn't open the top. They had the line ropes ready on Chair 23 but once the snow started, visibility was not good up top. Couple of my [poor] pictures from the day. It snowed non-stop the entire time I was there. Friday is going to be epic!

Does anyone know if chair 16 is open midweek, or is it only during the weekends?

I don't think I've ever seen a car parked at the top when there has been snow on the ground. Maybe someone got lost? Looks like it's some kind of marketing stunt? Now they're stuck. Someone is snapping pics.

September Update - Winter 25/26 Season Snowfall Outlook Data
September 5th, 2025 – ECMWF Seasonal Model Update Today’s ECMWF seasonal run keeps the weak La Niña in play a bit longer. Instead of fading quickly, the signal now holds through at least January, with neutral conditions not expected until mid to late February. Here’s what the maps are showing: - Nov–Dec–Jan: Greens light up across northern California and into the Sierra — often a sign of more storm action and a better shot at building early season snowpack. - Jan–Feb–Mar: More green, though a shade lighter. That’s still a positive signal for a full season’s worth of snowfall. Yes, this far out we’re in “fantasy land,” but green is always the color we want to see. Take a look at the ECMWF maps below — green shades mark wetter than normal trends, while brown shades point to drier conditions. September runs are a key checkpoint. If the Sierra stays painted green again in October’s update, confidence builds for a solid and steady winter. For now, it’s encouraging to see the signal lean our way. — Snowman 👉 Follow the Mammoth Weather Story here: https://www.mammothsnowman.com/mammoth-mountain-weather-forecast/

Thanks for the update, @Steve Taylor !
Drop 18
Anyone know if the 18 in “Drop 18” has any meaning? I was thinking maybe it was a shot placement number, though I don’t really know if shot placements are actually numbered. Cheers 🤙🏼

@Eric Januszko I’ve always thought that if they ever replace chair 4, they should locate the bottom at the bottom of chair 20 (rarely runs these days) and the top where old chair 10 used to end. That would give more access to the runs and trees on skiers right and maybe reduce cross-traffic congestion at the top.

Hi all! I’ve been coming to Mammoth since 2018 when I started snowboarding with my kids. I love the variety of terrain that Mammoth offers, and I like to explore and ride wherever the snow is fun. Being from Encinitas. I greatly appreciate @Steve Taylor’s reports and photos to keep me connected to the mountain when I’m not up there. Thanks Snowman!!
