How Do You Balance Team & GK Training?
I’m curious to learn about the balance between team training and goalkeeper-specific training in different parts of the world. With the season coming to an end, I’d love to hear how other goalkeepers structure their weekly training schedules. For reference, my son’s current routine includes two team training sessions per week Tuesday and Thursday, one dedicated goalkeeper-specific session on Wednesday, and one additional day focused on footwork and ball skills on Friday. Looking forward to hearing how others approach their training balance.

Mon - rest day Tues - team JPL training skills bases, sometimes GK session in this. Weds - GK mentoring/helping (not him training but examples etc) Thurs - team JPL training, more team/tactic focused, game play. Fri - GK mentoring/helping followed by his own J4K training. (His GK session is only fortnightly as his grassroots team also train this day, and we feel it's important he feels part of the team too). Sat match JPL Sun match grassroots. Ideally we'd have more GK training but that's something we need to consider for next year.
Warm ups? Home?
So trying to be more proactive in preventing injuries. What do your warm ups entail? And are they at home or when you arrive at match? Stretches/handling? So there's a theme of warm-ups being mainly focused on outfield players/passing etc. Little upper body. Once arrived at match, clubs do not allow any parent interaction. So we have started to get up earlier (meets at 8.30 up to 1hr away), and try to do some gentle stretches and some handling before he leaves. But I'm wondering if we should do more? Any ideas? Thank you. PS should add I'm trying to make sure he takes ownership/responsibility for being warmed up. Rather on relying on others. His health conditions aren't what others deal with. So he needs to learn to manage his himself.

@Mason Shaw that would be helpful if you can at somepoint. I'm literally only going by memory of school warm ups and the occasional social media post. Thank you!
Type1 diabetes.
My 13 year old lad has just made this video from last season. He suffers with his size due to being type1 diabetic and having severe hypos through the night resulting in countless bottles of lucozade and biscuits during the night. He has trialled at 3 professional clubs who have all said the same thing, loads of potential but due to size unable to offer a contract. He plays grassroots for our local team and JPL (top division) for Oxfordshire. Has anyone else on here got a child with type1 diabetes? If so how do you try to keep on top of sugar levels when it comes to matchdays and training sessions?

I would be seeking support from a sports nutritionist/dietician. What works for others to keep blood sugars level/up (like the sweets/glucose), might not necessarily be the right thing for him long term. We are having the opposite issues at the moment. Very low blood sugars and loss of weight/muscle mass. We are focussing on good fats, proteins alongside his carbohydrates. (Currently fixated on avocado and bacon bagels). I can find the name of the nutritionists his coach gets his advice from. If you would like?

@Ashley Hall I'll get back to you asap. Yes ours is also overnight! We tend to give supper at around 9pm (usually rice cakes/bananas/bread and meat/cheese, alongside a smoothie) and then wakes at 6am. I'm sure you do similar. I do think hormones/growth spurts at this age, make it extra difficult. We're actually undertaking a study soon with paediatric metabolic team as he's not diabetic. Just burns through food at a rate of knots!
Mental health break
Had some time away for a bit of a mental health break to try and rest and deal with daily life as Zak has had a tough few weeks at school. What have I missed? How is everyone? Training got cancelled again this week as one coach had work and our other has been told to rest due to a hernia. A bit nervous for the game this coming Saturday. Zak’s extremely anxious. It’s the team that are currently top of the league and has one of his bullies on the team. So fill me in! We will hopefully get back to regular now!

It's good to be aware of the need to take a mental health break. Hope Zak is doing ok? And how are you? We've just had a weekend of 2 top of table clashes. I won't lie it was tough. I tried to remind T he only needs to focusing on improving himself and doing the best he can. Result is not only down to him.

@Scott Donaway yes I feel this! GK training each week. JPL monthly fee. Grassroots subs. Then travel and then the gloves (we go through a fair few pairs). Oh and the endless amount of food!

Think we currently have 4 pairs. Though one is on their last legs. So need replacing. (Roughly last 4mths for us). But then they are used 4times a week for training.
