Pan pastel issues
Has anyone had any experience using pan pastel? The issue I'm having is related to using white pan pastel on black paper. I tend to like using pan pastel to get the starting values in my art. But, once the pastel is applied to the paper, I'm struggling to use white charcoal pencils over it. It's like the pan pastel fills the grain of the paper and the charcoal pencil has nothing to grip to. This results in the pencil scraping the pan pastel rather than applying charcoal to the paper. I've tried using compressed white charcoal, but the same happens. I've watch some tutorials on thus and they dint seem to have the same issues. I've managed to get around this by drawing over the pan pastel with soft white pastel sticks, but that's not my preferred method. Black pan pastel on white paper isn't an issue. Vine and willow draw very well over the pastel, not white seems to pose issues. Any tips?

I have some experience with pan pastels but I've never tried drawing over with a pencil. I've used uncompressed charcoal and dry white pastel over them and they both stick pretty well, perhaps because they are softer. You may try spraying a few layers of fixative on the pan pastel and then use the pencil as Vince says, if it is a good concentrated fixative, it will give the pastel some grip.

@James Conner Yes, I meant drawing over the dry fixative, and also blending with the pastel won't be possible.
Help
I'm after some advice guys. So I started a portrait and wanted to replicate the deep black hair. I was using the charcoal pencil in the picture and it seemed to smeer and make that section of the drawing really glossy and unable to draw over or erase. I'm not happy with it and going to start again. Shoukd I be using willow and layering it to get darker, or am I using the wrong tool

I think the paper you're using is too coarse, try some with more even texture and the charcoal will be easier to erase. Also what I've found useful is first having some willow charcoal basis, then drawing with the compressed charcoal above. The willow charcoal makes some semi-slippery basis the compressed charcoal above erases easier. Also, do not apply too much pressure when drawing with the compressed charcoal, try drawing with a softer charcoal pencil and less pressure, them smudge it with a finger for even deep blacks. I hope these help.
up coming video and events
Hey guys, I know it's been a while since I posted anything but remember one cannot achieve mastery at something if they cannot self-motivate. The course here contains all the info you need to practice and improve. I will do my best to spend time on it and may think of other ways to increase my attention on this community in the future. This week I should be able to look through the new drawing posts and make another feedback video. And I may make an poll regarding a live stream demonstration, or something similar to it and see how many are interested. (It makes no sense for me to do it if there is only like 3 ppl would show up) Anyway, keep supporting each other and post your art and drawing, including using your own references and provide cross-feedback. I'm always keeping an eye on the community even if I don't post anything. Okay stay tuned.

@Anthony Williams +1 for more on triangulation, I also think it is the hardest part.

I think mine looks more sad than pensive. Maybe just a slight tweak to the eyelid might change that.

I went to art school from age 6 to age 13, but remember almost nothing, only that art classes were the happiest time in those years.
