I'm after some advice guys.

So I started a portrait and wanted to replicate the deep black hair. I was using the charcoal pencil in the picture and it seemed to smeer and make that section of the drawing really glossy and unable to draw over or erase. I'm not happy with it and going to start again.

Shoukd I be using willow and layering it to get darker, or am I using the wrong tool
