Getting it Done
What’s the one thing stopping you from finishing your current WIP right now? Procrastination? Perfectionism? That endless research rabbit hole? We are have something - share yours below.

@James Blair My first book, which came out in 2012, sold 50 copies and was not very well received. And you're right, it takes quite a lot of getting over it to get past people's negative thoughts and then wanting to write again. But you have to continue to write for yourself more than you're writing for other people, or you'll never get past that fear.

@James Blair you’re right, it likely will. I’m still not 100% of the way there.
Behind the Scenes
Just to let you know where we are with the contest. We don’t like reading on a screen, so we send the entries off to a printer and get them back in big ring-bound booklets. Then we annotate, produce feedback for those who have requested it and work out who will be commended or long-listed. Good luck all!

That's very cool. Reminds me of my current book that I'm editing. I have the UPS store print and bind it for me and then I edit from there. Then there's more round after that pass is done. :)

@Chuck Stromme it feels really good to mark the paper up with red ink, so much fun! 😜🥰
Anyone ever had to start their end again?
Hello everyone, Not sure whether I'm looking for sympathy or advice, probably both, but I wanted to ask: has anyone else redrafted their WIP about ten times, only to discover the ending is far too complex and doesn't make sense? I've been working on this for years and I seem to remember the end was brilliant. But looking at it with fresh eyes over the Christmas break, I realise the final chapters are too complicated and a bit ridiculous. (You know that feeling when you cringe at your own work?) I'm with you @Lorna Riley when it comes to new ennui, but I was thinking some of you may have experienced this sort of crushing epiphany moment in your own writing lives. If you have, please could you share what you did next? Thanks 👍

I'm working on finishing my second book and with my first I couldn't get it right and forced the end just to say it was "done". Now I pretty much live on a hope and a prayer with book two. :)

@Juno Baker that’s great. You’ve got this. If you have to, as corny as it might sound, try writing a letter to your book asking where it needs the end to go. And keep asking yourself why after every answer. You’ll learn some interesting things about your book that way.
Prize Now Closed.
Congratulations to all those who entered the prize. We had over 533 entries, which is significantly more than last year (which was our first). Judging & feedback will proceed in line with the schedule on our website.

Good luck. Maybe next year I’ll have the courage to enter.
How much do you have 'planned' before you start writing?
I'm really interested to discover the extent to which people plan before starting to write proper. I'd be keen to know to what extent others stick to or modify their plans and whether they impact the final result at all. Do you just dive in and fix things in the edit later? Perhaps you start with a theme, but not necessarily the whole plot. Do you do any work to find the voices of your characters before kicking off? Maybe you have every element mapped out before starting.

I’m infamous for WANTING to plan, planning out the roughest of bones and then my characters say, “Not happening, woman!” So I figure out who, what, when, where, why, and hope I can come up with the hope of things and then just fly by the seat of my pants.
