Looking for a reverb plugin with good control over ER
Any suggestions? I really need a reverb that gives possibilities to tweak early reflections, without tail.
If you’re mainly looking for strong Early Reflections control, these are the ones I personally use the most in my mixes: Valhalla Room Good early/late balance control, adjustable room size and attack. Clean algorithm, very usable for shaping ER without washing everything in tail. Klevgrand – RO-Verb More of a multi-delay based reverb, which actually makes it great for tight, characterful early reflections. You can build short, controlled ER-style ambiences without relying on a long tail. Very useful on drums or for adding depth without mud. Eventide – Blackhole More creative, but you can emphasize the early energy and shape the spatial feel in a unique way. Not the most “natural,” but great if you want character. Waves – H-Reverb Very flexible. Lots of control over ER shape, timing, and level. You can really tweak the early reflections section separately and keep the tail under control. Waves – Abbey Road Chambers Different vibe, more vintage/character-based, but great for early reflection character and front-depth placement without overly long decay. These five are my go-to tools — the list is purely based on my own mixing experience.
FTM feb 26 - my mix
So I kind of made it, got a few hours squeezed in last night and a few tweaks this morning (including Dane's new bass stem). Even though I always wish I had more time to get into details, it's great practice to try and get something done so quickly. I already hear a few high level stuff I probably should've fixed - like a bit more control on low end and probably cut some mids from verse vocals ... would also like a little more 'lift' into the choruses - but alas, time ... Overall I'm reasonably happy with it - from a hobbyist perspective at least :) What do you guys think?
@Petter Jensen velfortjent langhelg “i kabinen” utenfor byen – og gratulerer med kjøpet av Weiss Complete 3! Skikkelig bra jobba, dette var fortjent 👏 As we’re in the Mastering Intensive together, I wanted to ask if you’d be open to preparing the stems so I could try doing my own mastering version and present it at the final session with @Chris Georgiou on Monday? I’d really appreciate it. You can DM me on Skool or just drop a link here — whatever is easiest for you. Gratulerer igjen – veldig bra levert!
@Petter Jensen Fair enough — no “langhelg” then 😄 Sounds like MI + FTM life is real. And yes… resisting new toys is part of the discipline. A hw synth vs. Weiss is a dangerous crossroads! As for the files since stem mastering is most likely the path of my future bright and long-lasting career 😉 I’d love to work from the stems, if possible. Something along the lines of: - Vocals - Bass - Drums - MIDS / Harmony (synths, piano, guitars) - Atmo / FX If that’s doable, of course. It would genuinely add a lot of educational value on my side — and who knows, it might help spread your winning mix even further through different mastering perspectives. No pressure at all — and honestly, a bit of time off wouldn’t hurt either. Even champions deserve recovery days.
Dithering
Hey everyone, I went through past threads regarding dithering and it's a divided topic, it was interesting to gather different perspectives but I didn't really find a direct answer for what I've been wondering - I also wasn't sure how old the threads were. With streaming accepting 24/48k and CD's becoming obsolete, is dithering still necessary at the mastering stage?
hey @Neeta Dash ! great question! The short answer is: No — not if you’re delivering true 24-bit. And just to be clear: dither is about bit depth, not sample rate , it has nothing to do with 44.1 kHz vs 48 kHz. It only matters when you reduce bit depth. Dither is needed when you go, for example: - 24-bit → 16-bit (CD) - 32-bit float → 16-bit Its job is to prevent quantization distortion when truncating bits. That’s a bit-depth issue, not a frequency/sampling issue. If your final master stays 24-bit (regardless of whether it’s 44.1 or 48 kHz), there’s no meaningful truncation problem in the audible range, so technically there’s no need to dither for Spotify, Apple Music, etc. You still must dither when creating a 16-bit file. That hasn’t changed. Some engineers add very light dither when exporting from 32-bit float to 24-bit, but at 24-bit the theoretical noise floor is already extremely low, so the audible benefit is basically negligible. If you are delivering 16-bit, there are solid modern options with noise shaping, e.g.: - Acustica Audio – e.g. Ocho or Ivory mastering suites include high-quality dither/noise shaping. - PSP Audioware – PSP Xenon or PSP VintageWarmer3 both include dithering options.
Recommended Reverbs? I still haven’t found…what I’m looking for…
Is there a reverb I am not aware of that has what I need on it? Patching everything here with two or more and I just need one maybe? So far tried magic 7, reaper stock, reverb from the reverb company . Venn audio too. Any recommendations appreciated. May just not be aware of a workaround. Thanks.
Below is a list of reverbs I personally rely on in real-world mixes from jazz and acoustic music, through rock and pop, to electronic productions and sound design. These are tools that sit well in the mix and actually glue elements together, sometimes even helping at the mastering stage, rather than just adding “space for the sake of space.” Some of them are excellent free gems, others are industry-standard classics, and a few are great for adding something extra, character, depth, or a unique spatial signature. If you’re looking for reverbs that support the mix musically instead of fighting it, this is a solid place to start. Valhalla Supermassive (free). A unique reverb/delay hybrid plugin capable of huge, lush ambient textures or rhythmic echo-verbs — great for pads, synths, and creative sound design. PSP Chamber (free). A simple and natural-sounding chamber-style algorithmic reverb that adds smooth spatial depth to tracks with dense, fast-developing decay. TAL-Reverb 4 (free). Vintage-style plate reverb with a streamlined interface, perfect for vocals, guitars or drums needing classic spatial ambience. HoRNet SpringVerb . A characterful spring reverb with a compact, musical decay that works great on guitars, keys, and retro-inspired sounds. It adds vibe and movement without washing out the source, making it easy to place elements forward in the mix while still giving them space. Auburn Sounds Panagement 2 (Free version). More than a reverb — a powerful spatial positioning tool that combines panning, width, distance, and early reflections. Excellent for creating front-to-back depth and stereo clarity, especially when you want space without traditional long reverb tails cluttering the mix. Classic Pro Reverb Plugins – Industry Standards Cinematic Room ProfessionalA dedicated studio reverb with realistic room modeling and adjustable reflections — built for polished, mix-ready ambience. TC Electronic VSS3Studio standard algorithmic reverb with advanced control over room size, diffusion and pre-delay for pristine mix placement.
