Modern Gaming
Question for you all... Are you all modern gamers as well? And what consoles do you play...XBox / PS / PC or are you purely retro gamers? I have PS5 and my PC runs my Flight Sim set-up, but definitely love going back to old games. Apologies if this slightly off topic, not looking to spark discussions on modern games, just curious if you all purely like the retro scene or play the modern consoles as well.

I have PC, Xbox Series X, PS5 and Switch. I honestly don't remember the last time I turned on the Xbox and I cancelled my Game Pass when Microsoft went shitty and shut down a bunch of game studios they bought, making thousands of developers unemployed. The Switch gets some use as we love Mario Kart in this house. PS5 doesn't really get used all that much either and when it does get turned on I'm mostly playing older titles from the PS2 era. I have a massive Steam and GOG library on the PC so I spend a lot of time paying Space Invaders, Pacman and emulating the Amiga ๐Ÿคฃ

Hi Guys I thought it would be cool to introduce ourselves and find out a bit about each other. I'll go first I guess :-) I'm based just south of London, UK and I'm an IT Trainer (26 odd years now). Been into Commodre ever since my Dad bought a Vic 30 around 83. Some of my fave 64 games include Gunship, Elite, Uridium, The Mars Saga, Nodes of Yesod, Ghost n Goblins, Forbidden Forest, Blue Max...oh man I could go on forever! lol Looking forward to meeting you guys here!

Modem on a C64
Does anybody on this site use a modem connected to their beloved C64. I used on for a little while but there wasn't too much interesting on the BBS systems, plus the connection was a bit shaky. Do you think the C64 should work stand-alone or have internet connection.

@Gabor Harsfalvi That's a great article mate, going to be getting that terminal program and looking at what's available. I love all the BBS stuff but never used it before. Something else to look forward to.
Good weekend (and any other day) games for quick playtimes
As most of us living in a rushing life you are always welcome some games on your favorite platform what you can just put anytime and play quickly. Here are some of mine starting this great weekend: - Killer Watt - This is a very entertaining game with a unique atmosphere and fantastic music. You can control your spaceship freely, and it responds very well to maneuvers. The track design is very tricky and ingenious at the same time, and it is exciting to navigate the narrow tracks flawlessly, which is further enhanced by the huge alien creatures. One of them even drops eggs into the air that act as mines. The point is to find and shoot the 12 light bulbs to advance to the next levels. - ACE - One of my very first air combat simulators, which really got me into these kinds of games. Its best feature is that it offers almost the same experience as its bigger and more advanced siblings (e.g., Stealth Fighter), but with everything simplified: takeoff and landing, map use, various firearms, and even aerial refueling have been skillfully worked out. This game is typically a simulation developed for quick games, which also runs completely smoothly. - Action Biker - This is typically the kind of game where just looking at the photo makes the melody start playing in your head, so you can hear the image... ;) So this is another game that lets you quickly have a good time, and depending on your skill, you can even finish it quickly by collecting all the motorcycle accessories. I really like the 3D graphics and it feels good to race across huge terrain. If you missed it, it's worth trying the newer version: https://c64universe.com/2025/01/16/action-biker-enhanced-2025-extend/ - Agent USA - It's a bit complex, but you can still make quick progress. I like how the game tries to teach players the names of real citiesโ€”you only get the ticket if you spell it correctly. The modern train is very futuristic even by today's standards, and I've always wanted to travel on one in the game, which isn't always easy to do. The multiplication of crystals and the exciting behavior of passersby rushing towards them also really liven up the atmosphere.

Just a few here for me. Encounter is a game I really enjoy. One of the first games I played in a kind of FPS guise. You play a pilot visiting different planets. Enemy UFOs arrive via portals and you have to shoot them all. The landscape is littered with obelisks that reflect your shots. Avenger. The Commodore conversion of Space Invaders and probably the most faithful port on the system. Ghostbusters, needs no introduction. Good Kniight is a modern release from Psytronik. A recreation of Ocean's Hunchback. And Night Knight, a conversion of an MSX title I believe. I also have this on the Spectrum Next. Great colour in the for while avoiding evil minions type game. Very addictive.
Hidden gems
I think it will be a special topic for everyone where you can show games or other things which are mostly less known for users of Commodore 64. I'll start here with two games I've found recently: - Nether Earth - Its a real time strategy game which is "the Command and and conquer of the 80's" by someone. "Nether Earth is a realtime strategy game that takes place in the distant future. A war is being waged between humans and ancient race of aliens called Insignian. On their mysterious planet there are four bases to capture - Kerberus, Tarras, Faretra and Diolkos. Use factories to build giant battle robots, similar to Mech units in other games. Commanding robots, capturing factories and defeating enemies in realtime are the player's primary goals. The player controls a small flying robot, instead of mouse cursor. With this robot the player can enter a factory to design unique battle robot from parts like wheels, antigrav, radar, laser gun or nuclear weapons. After that the player has to command the robot. Artificial intelligence works well at first, but in tough times it is possible to control the robot manually. As the balance of power changes with each conquered base, the player must also adjust strategies and tactics."
