10 Credit Card Secrets Banks Hope You Never Learn
Ever feel like the house always wins when it comes to credit cards? Your limits stay low, your rewards feel weak, and those bonuses feel "rigged." It’s not bad luck - it’s by design. Here are 10 secrets the banks don't want you to know: 1. The Redemption Trap: Redeeming points for gift cards or gas can slash their value in half. Always aim for high-value travel or cash back instead. 2. Deferred Interest Landmines: Miss a 0% promo deadline by one day or one penny? They’ll charge you interest on the original balance from day one. 3. Confusing Points on Purpose: Banks make the math hard so you can’t tell what your points are actually worth. One point does not always equal one cent. 4. "Pre-Approved" Doesn't Mean Approved: It just means you have high odds. A hard inquiry can still lead to a denial, so don’t get overconfident. 5. Your Limit Can Hit Zero Tonight: Banks can slash your credit limits or close your accounts whenever they want, even if you’ve never missed a payment. 6. Everything is Negotiable: You can call and ask for lower interest rates, waived annual fees, or retention bonuses. Most people just accept the first "no." 7. The "Grocery" Lie: That 5% back on groceries often excludes big names like Walmart and Target. Check the merchant codes before you spend. 8. Cash Advances are Debt Traps: They come with higher interest, zero grace periods, and extra fees. They are the fastest way to ruin your credit health. 9. The "Ask High" Strategy: If you ask for a small limit increase, they give you a small one. Ask high, and let them counter-offer. Don't play small. 10. The "Bucket" Prison: Some banks (mostly Capital One) lock your account into a "risk bucket" based on your credit when you first applied. If you're bucketed, your limits may never grow or rarely. Stop letting the banks dictate the rules of your financial journey. You need to know how to play the math in your favor, especially as a Cloud Resident & ITIN holder. Which of these secrets surprised you the most? Let’s discuss below! 👇

Thanks for sharing.
Capital One Automatic Credit Limit Increase to $4500 USD
It been close to 3 months since I'm using my Capital One Platinum, which was approved with $2000 limit. For past 3 months, I have been using the card for all my spending and paying off all balance in full after the statement date. Today, I received an automatic limit increase from $2000 to $4500 I was really surprised to see automatic increase because after the first month, I applied for a credit limit increase in the app and it was rejected with reason "account too new."

Congrats! But don't you usually have to wait 6 months before Capital One gives you a limit increase?
My ITIN story with about 5 months of history
So, I am coming to this community to share my experience, maybe receive some suggestions about what I did with my ITIN (903-xx-xxxx) so far. I got this ITIN after a super long time of waiting because IRS requested me to sign another paper for them to issue it, which I had to mail personally to the US, besides the application the CAA I used at the time did. Anyway, had it finally on my screen around Sept 2025. So, what happened is that I finally received my ITIN, and I started of with one account: - CapOne Savour One - $59/year or something Used that one religiously for the time being, no transactions outside of US, payments on time, statement balance always adjusted around 6-7-8% of limit, etc. That account got closed out of nowhere with the recent wave of bans. I was lucky that Ain helped me out and exactly one day ahead of the ban he suggested I try opening OpenPay, after being unsuccessful with some other applications (Petal card, DCU, BCU) I also managed to open a Fidelity account for a normal checking account, along with OnePay. What I tried next after OnePay, was AMEX. I failed their pre-approval but they didn't give out a statement as to why, it was something surprising as usually they give out a generic reason, but my rejection letter had none. What did I manage to do to replace CapOne? I opened an Amazon Secured Card (Store Prime Card, I think it only works on Amazon unfortunately, to my surprise) I was curious to hear some opinions on my journey, cards that maybe some of you had working even with low amount of history, etc. Right now my credit file will probably be a bit broken since the very first CC opened got closed (CapOne) So what's keeping it alive is the Amazon secured card + OnePay credit builder thing. Any suggestions on cards to apply in my situation that work outside of the States on day-to-day spending without being closed for that (like CapOne seems to do) If you have any questions about what I shared above, I'll reply in the comments! :)

Welcome and thanks for sharing! Good luck with your credit journey. I’ve been looking to apply for Capital One too, but I’m holding back for now strictly because of those shutdowns. Keep us posted!
Tello SIM | Non Resident: APPROVED
If any of you are having issue with Tello for signing up from outside USA, this may help you: - I got rejected for 5+ times form 2 new accounts ; using email from pc browser - I used foreign address + foreign card, US address + US card but still got rejected - Doing it from mobile browser and paying with Apple pay fixed the issue ( google pay should work too ) - Sim card was approved within a minute I asked their support about why it is being rejected and they said, their automated system is not approving me. Since its automated system, you can find ways :) Hope this helps.
