First paragraph: The Hand of Justice
It was the boy, Jakob, who saw it first, as he skipped across the bridge on his way to school. A flutter of red cloth at the edge of the breaking ice, as the water in the slowly thawing river began to flow. He remembered that his classmate Mikkel had lost his scarf in a gust of wind, crossing the bridge some months earlier. He would show him on the way home. Perhaps they might even be able to recover it from its watery resting place.

This is a really excellent opening - eerie and beautifully written. I wonder if the adverb “slowly” is needed.

I want to think diversity & representation focus like Open Waters by Caleb Azumah Nelson, which I found in Waterstones this summer and fell in love with, but someone I know in publishing told me that moment has now passed, so I don't know. :/ Think there's a popular subgenre - weird girl lit - which I'm totally for!

@Jonathan Mark Bayliss Those last few words! V. high stakes!

@Jane D Ooh I like this - feel like it's hinting at being UpLit - which I'm really into atm! I agree with Issy about identifying and amplifying the tension.

@Yvonne McMillan Clear stakes and clear tension! Agree about the adjectives, especially opening few sentences - could strip out a couple without losing the claustrophobic feel

@Louis Urbanowski Already like the voice and humour of the first few lines. Slightly distracted by the verb 'fondled' - not sure why!
