@Danielle Marietta Great question. It often depends on both the editor’s process and what the manuscript needs. In my workflow, I usually go through a manuscript at least twice before sending it back. The first pass is a focused read to understand structure, pacing, character arcs, and overall clarity. I’m identifying what the story needs at its core. The second pass is where I refine. I tighten the language, fix inconsistencies, smooth transitions, and leave clear, practical comments. By the time it goes back, the author has both edits and direction. From experience, authors get the best results when they understand this process. Editing is not just correction, it is shaping the story into its strongest form. A careful, multi-pass approach always delivers better work.
