I remember surprising a flute teacher when I told him that I had listened -- by choice -- to Rampal's Bach sonatas when I was growing up. I'm still much more of a classical nerd than many of my friends, and I have a couple of cousins with whom I enjoy going to the symphony. I learned a lot about chamber music when I had the privilege of attending many seasons of the Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival, a two-week festival that attracts national and international chamber musicians. I developed a new appreciation for Beethoven's and Brahms's quartets, and a side of Schubert I didn't know. Also lots of new composers, some of whom were approachable and some not so much. Given my druthers, I'll choose Romantic composers, and I'm learning more about contemporary classical music.
Sometimes your Inner Critic needs to speak!
I was reminded of my Livestream with Katherine Werbiansky when I was chatting with @Amanda Huber and suggested something that sometimes helps me when I'm journaling: giving each personality (like the inner critic, inner cheerleader, CEO, teacher, etc) their own place on the page and letting them have a conversation. This helps me clear my mind. Amanda pointed out that maybe she hadn't realized how much those parts want to be heard!! We all want to be heard, right? Katherine taught me about Internal Family Systems - "IFS." Every mind is plural and we are like a family inside; ideally, we all get along! But when they don't, giving them a voice helps. I think the movie "Inside Out" beautifully animates this idea! Here's the replay. Let me know, do you relate to the conversation?

IFS/parts work is a really powerful therapy tool. Facilitating conversations between your parts can be revelatory and freeing. I've done it with my inner child writing with my left (non dominant) hand and my current self writing with my right. Really interesting when you give your more hidden parts permission to express themselves.

Intonation has always been a bugaboo for me. It's especially challenging when playing with string players. Improv will help me develop better ears for intonation.
