✍️ *POLL* - Best Time For Weekly Ear Training Call
As some of you know, we have been hanging out on Fridays to talk ear training. Its come up that another day may be better! On my end, any weekday at 7pm PST works well for me. To simplify, Ill offer that as an option for now with the potential days below.

🧙 *NEW LESSON* - Functional Harmony + Chord Substitutions
Hello! Last night we had our weekly group call all about chords and progressions in the context of composition. We had a lot of fun getting nerdy on extended chords, functional harmony and chord substitutions! As I learn more about each of you who is interested in participating, these calls will become increasingly structured and oriented towards your needs! This platform was created for YOU! So if there are ever any questions you have about anything you are unsure of or would like to learn about, please let me know in the Questions page and I'll be happy to respond to you there!

Exploring Ionian Tonality ☀️
𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮: R 2 3 4 5 6 7 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 (𝗖): C D E F G A B 𝗙𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴: Bright, Joyful, Heroic, Resolute Ionian, also known as the major scale, radiates a mood of optimism, triumph, and clarity. Its uplifting intervals (especially the major 3rd and 7th) create a sense of resolution and completeness, making it the sound of celebrations or anthems. 🏆 At its core lies the I - IV - V - I progression, a timeless sequence that defines Western music. These three chords contain all seven notes of the Ionian mode, weaving a harmonic tapestry that feels like "home." What makes Ionian magical is its versatility: - The IV chord adds warmth (try substituting with ii for a gentler flow). - The V7 chord creates tension, "demanding" resolution back to I. - The vi chord (relative minor) offers a subtle emotional pivot

Literally everything I teach is based on the starting point of understanding the diatonic scale in C major. Chords, chord progressions, the modes, even the pentatonic scale…

@Connor Gray yep
🔍 *LESSON* - Understanding Key Centers
Below is a chord progression of 4 chords... Using your ears alone, deduce which one of the chords is the tonic, or key centre of the progression. If you are unsure of how to do this or what this even means, we're going to be hanging out tomorrow at 7:30pm to talk about it together! It's a great, welcoming and safe space to explore our listening experience together. Bring any questions you have about ear training and music and Ill be happy to talk about it ✨ Hope to see you all there ✌️

@Connor Gray yeah I agree, I couldn't justify the E minor being the root because it didn't make sense to me... like it's obviously not a ii - I - v... but it could also be vi - V - ii - vi...

@Connor Gray when a minor chord is a tonic, it’s usually a vi, or a ii, on a rare occasion a iii. It’s not a iii because the D would be a Dm. It’s not a ii because the Am would be A (major) or A7 (dominant). So it’s most likely a vi, which is the most often used minor as tonic. It’s sounds Aeolian to me, which again makes it a vi. The ambiguity is derived from the fact that it doesn’t have a strong cadence, and/ or resolution. But I agree that the Em is the tonic.
