Homebrew Campaign Loosing Momentum
So the game I DM for seems to be loosing its fuel. Players tell me they are enjoying the sessions. We just wrapped up a mini arc that introduces the main conflict of the campaign or at least last session it was revealed to the players that there’s something going on. We play once a month and we play regardless if someone misses. My group size started at 6 but I haven’t DM for all 6 players at once. As of now two players are out completely because of personal stuff and another has only shown up twice because of schedule conflicts. I have three dedicated players who usually show up no matter what but one of them is going to miss this month’s session. Another dedicated player is starting to feel that the campaign is a “wash” because other players aren’t consistent with showing up to play, it’s been difficult for players to keep track of what’s going on because they don’t bother reading other player’s adventure logs when they miss sessions so they stay in the loop, and that while the story and campaign are interesting it is extensive and requires a lot out of the players to keep track off. We’re planning on going a break either in June or July because my wife(other dedicated player) is giving birth to twins and most likely won’t be starting back up until some time next year around March to May. Dedicated player is worried that when we go on break that we don’t be able to pick right back up where we left off or keep playing. This isn’t the first time this has happened. Last time I tried running Curse Of Strahd and it ended because of scheduling and the players didn’t really have a goal in mind or if they did, they didn’t tell me so I could plan around what they wanted to do. The only person that has stuck with the group is my wife. Everyone else is new to this homebrew campaign but for the life of me, I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong as a DM. Not sure if I need to look at doing more sessions a month, give them less freedom in what they want to do, or what.

I had to cut players even before we started due to missing character creation deadlines. I had like 9 interested people and was planning on doing just two groups with monthly sign ups. But through conversations I narrowed it down to 6 players. We started the campaign back in October. One player has only played 2 out of the 5 sessions so far and I let everyone know at the end of session when the next session is for the following month and it always seems that the one player who has only played actually had something personal or professional going on. They always seem generally bummed out that they have to miss the session and always let me know at least a couple weeks in advance that they’ll be missing. The two sessions that they’ve been able to play in, they were highly interested and engaged with the game and it didn’t take a lot to get them up to speed or fill in the missing blanks of what happened. My wife is willing to compromise to doing two sessions a month until June to maybe help get everyone back on track and interested instead of having a 3-5 week break in between sessions. She’s already mentioned multiple times of stop playing when after the kids arrive but said I should still keep the game going because she knows dnd is my favorite hobby and that I could switch to an online game vs in person. Like I really want to give the schedule player a chance before having to kick them. They already said they’re free almost every weekend in April. I’m not really sure what to do though. Like I’m half tempted to just start fresh with a new campaign and characters No one in the party has does Lost Mines Of Phandelver besides myself as a player and we never finished playing. From what I’ve played of it and have read reviews on, it seems like a great adventure that really sells what DnD is. Currently we’re running an island hopping adventure with water travel and exploration. The region is on the verge of war between two empires that are fighting over a rare material that’s from another plane. Last session the party were given the ultimatum of either joining the rebellion or fight a high level NPC.

@Jay George thanks for the feedback. I had a conversation with each of the players individually and they all still want to play in the group and like me as their DM (which is a relief). We all agreed that we need to start fresh with a new campaign and considering how busy we each are, I think I’ll be running an official module and thinking of trying to run Curse Of Strahd again. We’re aiming for shorter sessions but 2x a month. Gave the players the dates that I can DM and everyone agreed the dates work for them. Am I setting myself up for failure again by trying to run Strahd again?
A lonely DM wonders into a bookstore…
Hey all, new to the community. Finally picked up Proactive Roleplaying yesterday at Barnes and Nobles after having it on my Amazon wishlist. Super excited to be here! Been DMing D&D 5e(2014) for the last couple of years and finally started my first homebrew campaign in a homebrew setting. Assassins Creed Black Flag & Pirates of and Caribbean meet Lovecraftian horrors. We just wrapped session 4 this past Saturday and have kind of been guiding my party through their first quest get to the know a part of the region they’re starting in. Basically it’s more or less a prologue. I wanted the party to get a home base and a ship so they could travel around and explore the region. Their first quest is discovering what’s actually going on in the world. It'll probably wrap up in 3-4 more sessions and at that point based will introduce them to the actual major threat of the region and possibly the world. We’re going on a break around May or June and will resume probably around the beginning of the next year. My wife(player) and I are expecting around July. So we wanted to take about 6 months to adjust to being parents before continuing the campaign. Once we resume, I’m hoping to take what I’ve learned from reading Proactive Roleplaying and put it to use. Hoping that I can work with the party and start developing goals since by the time we break, they’ll have 10 sessions in and have a feel for what the world is like. Anyways happy to be here and looking forwards to learning and absorbing as much as I can.

Started playing D&D 5e(2014) a little over 3 years ago after listening to an actual play podcast and was hooked. Eventually landing in the DM seat.
