Would you please take 2 minutes to help me?
SXSW has chosen two of my talks to be put up to a panel vote. They use the vote tallies to choose the final ones that get to take the stage. You have to create an account (takes a few seconds) then place a heart beside the talk title. That is it!! Your votes would really help me. Thank you!! The links for my sessions so you can vote are here: https://participate.sxsw.com/flow/sxsw/sxsw26/community-voting-edu-auth/page/community-voting/session/1753456154345001c4vk And https://participate.sxsw.com/flow/sxsw/sxsw26/community-voting-sxsw/page/community-voting/session/1753454780013001gwFC

Help me choose an author photo. Thx!
Trying to choose author photo for upcoming book and would like the help of the community. Three choices below. (Two dog pics very similar, but different facial expression, serious vs playful; book is fairly serious, so not sure what is the right look. My photographer likes the playful one, I like the more serious one, so interested to know what others think.) Click on photos to see full, uncropped version. Thanks!

Thank you everyone for your help. No dog it is! (Although he will certainly make an appearance on social media.) General consensus is that A looks more “authorly.” (Not a real word, according to Merriam-Webster, but I like it.) 😎
How important is a Foreword...?
So, I've had a placeholder in my book for a Foreword by some really great person TBD since I put pen to paper, but... I haven't asked anyone to write one yet... How important is a foreword? Is it something to add in the second edition...? Must I have one now? Thoughts?

I had the same thing, finally took out the placeholder as we got into production, realizing I was so busy with editing, marketing, production, etc., that I didn’t have the time or energy to get one done after my first choice said no because he didn’t have the time or energy to do it right. Figure if the book finds an audience I’ll get someone to write one for a second edition in a couple years.
A Book Launch to Watch!!
Every so often, a book launch comes along that’s worth watching - not because you’ll do the same thing, but because of what you can learn from it. Let's watch it unfold together. I'm talking about: Alex Hormozi’s latest book launch on Saturday, August 16th at 9am PST: Register here to watch it unfold Alex is a self-publishing powerhouse who’s building an entire book series with the single goal of building buzz for his business. His first two books in the series had epic launches, and this one is shaping up to be even more spectacular. I think it's great to take note of how he's doing it. He is not worried about a list of any kind. He will be driving hundreds of thousands of book sales right to his website during this launch. Right now, in presale, the book is ONLY available on his website. Afterwards he will sell through traditional retail channels. After the launch, join me on BookLaunchers.TV where I’ll break down: - What worked - What most of us should skip - And how mere mortal authors like us can adapt the best pieces of his launch for our own success. Grab your spot in his launch and take notes of what he is doing 10 days out, 4 days out, and on the day of to create momentum! It's going to be great to watch this. Then meet me live for the breakdown. [Now I am heading out for a week of vacation so you won't see me back here until August 11th ... behave while I'm away :) ]

I won’t register because he requires my phone number and my “consent for his partners to contact me by phone or text.” I value my privacy. I also will not buy his book(s) because of that invasive hard sell technique. Not my cup of tea.
Memoir Writers and Readers ... What do YOU think?
I posted this on LinkedIn for the content challenge we're doing with the Author Business Accelerator group but I am curious what you guys think on this ... It's about The Salt Path ... if you haven't been following that I explain it in the video on this post. https://www.linkedin.com/posts/juliebroad_when-a-memoir-moves-readers-to-tears-inspires-activity-7351711791577518080-9ZzE?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop&rcm=ACoAAABYev0BRlzasTC8wKIjnkN5LgRa0QE-los

You definitely half to be truthful. Fully. No half-truths. If you’re not sure, leave it out. And if it’s boring, then it shouldn’t be written. You can use your life as a starting point if you want to embellish, and then it’s called fiction. Like Hemingway and his Nick Adams stories. Nothing wrong with that. Memoir is a sub-genre of non-fiction. Period. Opinions, dreams, fantasies—all fine as long as it’s clear that’s what they are. As my father always said, the only thing of value a person really has is their reputation. Don’t ruin yours..

And BTW, does the “melanie mary book editor pro” bot understand this is a forum hosted by a professional book production/editing/marketing company?! 🤣🤣🤣
