Pigeons: 🕊️ Respect for the Birds We Forgot – With the Facts They Deserve
It’s heartbreaking how easily we turned pigeons into “vermin” and “flying rats,” especially when the facts tell a completely different story. Pigeons are one of humanity’s oldest domesticated animals — kept for over 5,000 years. They carried messages across continents, delivered news of victory and peace, and saved lives in wartime. Some were even awarded medals for bravery. They navigate using the Earth’s magnetic field, recognise human faces, and can find their way home from hundreds of kilometres away. They mate for life, raise their chicks together, and show remarkable intelligence — on par with parrots and crows. Every “feral” pigeon in our cities is a descendant of birds we bred, birds who trusted us enough to live at our side. My grandfather had bred them for the war effort and the stories are many. They don’t deserve insults. They deserve respect — for their history, their loyalty, their resilience, and their quiet partnership with us.
