Is It Really Super?
Tossing a new one into the Skoolroom. Opened this last night after getting back from NY. Still on an Italian kick. This is a Super Tuscan from Bolgheri. Get your maps out. Bolgheri is very close to the coast, west of Chianti. Part of the Livorno province. For those that don’t know, the region popularized red wines in Italy made in a Bordeaux style blend. The first were commercialized in the 70s and 80s. Some famous, delicious, big bottlings (that need a big bank account) like Sassicaia, Tignanello and Ornellaia, got the wine world’s attention. My wine is not one of those! However, it was/is a very nice drop as the Brits say. A classic blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, but it doesn’t taste like a Bordeaux. It’s all about the terroir. See if you can find a Super Tuscan that fits your budget. I think you’ll like it! Maybe try to do a side-by-side of a Super Tuscan and a Bordeaux that have similar blends? 🍷

Thank you for posting about this wine. I had a Sassicaia at my friend's house and wasn't prepared for the difference between an Old World Super Tuscan and a New World Bordeaux blend. I was actually disappointed and once I consulted with a wine expert I was told it probably needed to sit for a few more years. I'm not sure I'm convinced and certainly not for the price point but would love to do a side-by-side with something like yours against a CA Bordeaux blend. Cheers!

@Michael Monte that definitely makes more sense.😜 Where did you pick up the wine you tried? Local wine shop or one of the big boys?
Howdy New Slik Skool-ers!
I see that we have some new people in the group who haven't introduced themselves yet! I built out the wine course on the Classroom tab from scratch because it was the practical tool I wish I had when I started in wine (I was sick of creating a million flashcards for obscure regions and grapes I'd never really see or taste). I'd love to hear from everyone to answer these 3 questions: - What you're looking to achieve/have achieved by joining Slik Skool - What intimidates you about wine - What did you want to be when you were 5 years old (I wanted to be a Marine Biologist) Part of the Slik Skool charm is that there's a good group of people on here to bounce ideas off of, plus interacting will help you progress through the course. I'll be hosting Q&As throughout the month (there's one next week), so I'd love to see yoy there as well. Let me know how I can help you!

Been here a while but I love that you wanted to be a marine biologist when you were 5 @Marie Cheslik I hear that a lot. Ironically, I am a marine biologist. 😂😊
Lil' Updates: Skool Perks, Coffee Hour Q&A, & NOLA Recs
Howdy Everyone! A few updates this week: 1. Being part of Slik Skool, I'm giving every active user on here an Advanced Reader Copy of my book, How To Read A Wine Label (I know the Slik Skool was split between 1 and 2, but 1 has a wider appeal, so we're going with that!). If you're reading this and want one, write a comment down below so I know you're interested. 2. Due to popular demand, I put another Q&A session in the calendar. This time, I put in a Coffee Hour Q&A instead of a Happy Hour one for the 20th! I put a poll down below to see if you like the idea of a coffee Q&A or want to only do Happy Hours. I'm such a morning person that I love this idea but want to see how you guys feel. 3. @Kimberly Kaplan asked for some New Orleans recommendations after I went a month ago, so thanks for your patience on this, but here's a list I've gathered from my chef friend. I'd also add Pluck to the list of wine bars to check out. You won't find a lot of the classic spots because the chef friend used to live there, so he likes going a bit more off the beaten path. Classics I'd recommend are Commander's Palace, Galatoire's, or Antoine's if you've never been to NOLA.

Thanks, Marie! I love all the recommendations for NOLA and hope that you had a great trip. We love off the beaten path and hole-in-the-wall places just as much as the larger establishments. We are equal opportunity. I love Happy Hour but would also like Coffee Hour too. Maybe mix them up and do both? Finally, so excited about your new book and would love an ARC! Thanks so much!
I need your help, Slik Skool!
Howdy! We're chugging along nicely with the book and y'all get to see it first. The COVER PAGE! I'd love your feedback with the cover art as well as the titles! We mocked up 3 different titles and I'd love to know: which title are you most likely to purchase? I'd love to hear all your thoughts: good and bad. You won't hurt my feelings 😂 I also have posted some new events for March in the calendar so check em out!

I always love the word, “handbook” in a title. Nuff said. 🍷
Wine at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge
Just returned from a trip to Disney World and a stay at Animal Kingdom Lodge. While not expecting much I tried a wine flight at the hotel and was pleasantly surprised by one in particular. It was a 2021 Spice Route Chakalaka. Grenache blend. Very drinkable with a reasonable price point. I have very little experience with South African wines but after this would love to explore more. Has anyone tried this wine or had a good experience with other labels from South Africa?
