What Watching or Reading the News Is Doing to Your Body
Most people think the news affects their thoughts. In reality, it affects their nervous system first. Your body doesn’t register headlines as neutral information. It registers them as potential threat—especially when they’re framed around danger, conflict, outrage, or urgency (which most are). The Biology Behind the Reaction… When you watch or read the news, your brain’s threat center (the amygdala) scans for risk. If it detects uncertainty or danger—even abstract danger—it signals the body to prepare. That preparation looks like: - Increased cortisol and adrenaline - Faster heart rate - Shallow or held breathing - Muscle tension (jaw, shoulders, hips) - Heightened alertness and vigilance This is the same response your body would have if something were happening to you, even when it isn’t. Why the News Can Feel So Draining… The nervous system isn’t designed for constant threat exposure without resolution. Unlike real danger—where there’s an action, an escape, or an end—news cycles keep the body activated without relief. Over time, this can lead to: - Fatigue that doesn’t match your physical output - Irritability or emotional reactivity - Trouble sleeping or staying asleep - Brain fog and reduced focus - Digestive issues and immune suppression You may feel “informed,” but your body feels like it’s been on standby all day. Why It’s So Hard to Stop Watching… News consumption can become compulsive—not because you like it, but because your brain is trying to regain control. Stress creates discomfort.Discomfort creates the urge for more information.More information increases stress. That loop isn’t a character flaw. It’s how a survival system works when it senses uncertainty. The Impact Is Stronger for Some Nervous Systems… If you’ve experienced trauma, chronic stress, caregiving fatigue, or long-term responsibility, your baseline alert level may already be elevated. News exposure can push your system from alert into overstimulated very quickly. That doesn’t mean you’re weak. It means your system is already carrying a lot.

Read it, don’t watch it. By reading it you have better control over the amount you take in at a time, its tone, and the emotional stimulation aspects of the news. Downside is sometimes the info you read is op-ed or downright exaggerated, but a little screening of sources and you’re good to go.

@Joshua Haag I did pay attention for a few minutes in college brother. Maybe not successive minutes, but collectively a few for sure
Do Cooling Mattresses Actually Work?
Walk into any mattress store, scroll Instagram for five seconds, or breathe near a sleep-related hashtag… and suddenly you’re drowning in cooling beds, cooling toppers, cooling pads, cooling pillows — basically everything short of a refrigerated blanket. Eight Sleep, Sleepme (ChiliPad/OOLER), Tempur-Pedic — they’re all pushing “active cooling.”GhostBed, Viscosoft, Alwyn Home — they’ve got the passive cooling game on lock. The rise of voices like Matt Walker, Andrew Huberman, Peter Attia, etc. has taken the research mainstream. Now everyone knows: Temperature isn’t a luxury — it’s a core part of sleep quality. Companies know that, too. Eight Sleep literally markets that Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg use their products, as if owning the same bed as a tech billionaire will magically fix your REM cycles. So the real question is… Do cooling mattresses actually work or are we getting seduced by fancy tech and solid marketing?

Great question. I don’t notice the difference personally, but Kim swears she does. I personally need airflow to stay cool, so we have the ceiling fan on 365 nights a year.
Day 11!!!!!
Ok REAL TALK. When was the last time some of you changed your mattress??? Its bananas at how long people keep these, but then complain of poor sleep and bad backs! the studies say ever 7 years is the golden rule!!!

Morning! Representing the east coast here - life-long Northern NJ resident and business owner. I am an outdoor enthusiast, high school football coach, and love spending time with my family chasing our daughter from softball field to softball fields doing what she loves. My goal here is to find some balance; high pressure environments create diamonds, but they also create a heavy stress-load along the way haha!
