I’ll get one, what do I have to do?
The coolest shirts
My two ethical predator shirts arrived yesterday, and I got to say they better in real life. Thank you Grant and Jenn for the extra effort. Being the only person on the big island to have them I’m kind of stoked. They are just the the thing for this archer. Any chance on getting the first edition of the shirt evolution?

Instinctive shooting
One archers journey #2 Archery is good drug and I get my fix every day. The range runs between two rows of citrus trees, levelish to around ninety feet. I hang at round sixty feet and fling from there. Since I’ve only been at it for a few months there is a tendency to stick to basics. Form, posture, draw, aim, release and follow through. It’s a lot to put together. For what seems like the longest time I was aiming, using the tip of the arrow as a guide and holding the fully drawn bow for many seconds until releasing when it felt right. From time to time the arrows hit the mark, but it was rare to be consistent In finding the center of the target. One morning, shooting with a friend that’s exactly what we were doing. The arrows hit all over the place. We were talking in between shots and Don brought up the idea about doing quicker shots. The idea was to release almost immediately after the full draw. I’m sure we’ve all seen videos of this method and I wondered why did I wait so long to give it a go. Well chalk it up to inexperience. Since that morning I’ve been working the quick shot, releasing almost immediately after the full draw is anchored . Is this what is meant by instinctive shooting? This archer thinks so now after months of aiming. Waiting five to fifteen seconds it became obvious that the bow hand began to waiver before the arrow was released. Even wavering a little caused a greater error in the arrows at the end of the flight. For myself, I am taking my time learning archery. It’s the journey, not the destination, that’s fascinating. Grant and Jenn are always spot on in their opinions and answers. I love candid people in general. Ah, I drift from the the point. What was it again??? Oh yeah the quick shot, the instinctive shot. To be honest it proved better than aiming, when the quiver went empty and I went to pull the arrows. Nice clusters, a few closer to center and fewer all over the place. Basically beginners luck and it turned on the light in this archers head, a moment of clarity.

The ethical predator discussion
HOW THE IDEA OF THE ETHICAL PREDATOR RAISED MY AWARENESS Ethics. The discussion about the ethics of man go back as far as the Greek empire and probably earlier. Having read the Nicomedian Ethics by Aristotle, and the discourses of Socrates as recorded by Sysyphus, for Socrates never wrote anything down. He was a talker and spoke at great lengths discoursing the ethics of man, among other things, you could say I know a thing or two about ethics. Then again maybe nothing at all. Aside; Socrates was put to trial over his supposed moral infractions of the times. He was found guilty and given a choice of either going into exile, far from his beloved Greece, or committing suicide by drinking poison. It was and still is a questionable verdict. Any moral issues against him were here say and the case in the Greek senate was a weak one. The real reason he was turned in was that he could out talk anyone at the time, the Socratic line of questioning was simply unbeatable and he pissed off more than a few powerful men. What exactly this has to do with archery I’m not quite sure, but I needed a way of starting this discourse. When I spotted a fb post by Grant about the ethical predator, something seemed right after scanning the post. Let me regress and give some backstory and maybe this might start making sense. About ten years ago my wife and I took a month to enjoy the South Island of New Zealand And visit an old friend who, if I remember correctly, we danced on the tabletops of Harringtons Bar in San Francisco with about thirty years ago. Needless to say to say we were all piss drunk and lucky to remember anything at all about those nights close to closing time. While there we met her boyfriend at the time and he is an avid hunter and eager to tell his tales of the hunt. One story revolves around him spotting a trophy sized antelope across a ravine from his position. According to Bob an antelope has 8 power eyesight similar to his 30.06. If the animal was to spot him it would disappear Into the bush. Bob also implied that they were on equal footing because of that tremendous eyesight. He unshouldered his long gun and put the animal in the crosshairs. At which point I asked, sarcastically, if the antelope had a rifle too. Which brought on a look of wtf are you talking about. I went on to say, then you were not on equal terms there by garnering another look that said what are you some kind of tree hugger dumbass. I sort of slammed closed his story without realizing it. However it got me thinking about the hunt that seemed to me to be more about killing than hunting. The antelope didn’t stand a chance.

@Kelsey Holts mahalo Kelsey, it means thank you in Hawaiian. Your feedback is encouraging and important. Not only is there the physical part of stalking and shooting single string, the inner hunt is also at play. It works on both levels of consciousness. There is actually a kind of high that occurs after shooting. It brings peace, well at least to this archer. Have a beautiful day!!!
