Clinton Gulch post Sam's Critique
I have implemented changes per Sam's critique. I lightened shadows in the back two-three mountains, toned down the yellow/ochre in the biggest mountain, lightened the back ridge, and lightened the sky. I also put some desaturated greens and such at the base of the concave back ridge, varied the pines on the left, and monkeyed with the snow areas. I also restated shadows in the tre-filled hill closest us. Left is update. Right is previous. Water is untouched. Any tint differences are due to lighting variance.

Hi Loreen. Your shading updates improved an already good painting. They really make it pop! You must be very happy with this one.
First Juried Exhibition
I entered two paintings in my first juried exhibition today. They both got in and I got an Honorable Mention for the street scene. I'll take that. 😃

Hi Robert. Your street scene capture the light and shadows very effectively. The street perspective is bang on. It captures the depth and distance perfectly. I like all the little details right down to the glass table tops and people strolling down the stone sidewalk. Excellent work. Also excellent work on the industrial scene. Colours and contrasts are great . 👍
Canvas sizes?
Hi! I’ve just joined! I’m at the buying supplies stage. What size canvases are you all generally working on for your paintings to get started with? I’m completely new to oil painting. Done a few weeks of watercolor. Thanks!

Hi @Jo Edwards. Welcome to the site. I too would recommend using a small canvas. Also another tip when you are first starting out is to paint on "paper" that you prime yourself with latex paint. It will save you money on canvas while you develop you oil painting skills. Just do a google search online "priming paper for oil painting" and you should find instructions on how to do this.
First complete oil painting
For being my first oil painting I'm pretty happy. The water is definitely more green than I anticipated, and I'm not sure about the hilight and shadow on the mountain. But I am happy with the clouds. Comments are welcome!

Thumbs up on your first painting Alexia.👍
Clinton Gulch day 3 painting
Still have yet more to do. Please share thoughts about the added darks on the right side of the larger hill/mountain in back/right. Distracting or defining? The backmost mountain ridge and the tree-filled hills are unchanged. Any color differences is due to different lighting. Left photo is new; right is from day 2.

Excellent Loreen! I too prefer the dark shadows. Tree shadows and lighting on the left and the reflections in the water are also well done. Overall the scene has a good feel depth and distance.
