Struggling with composition? Here's a free lesson
Hey artists Are you struggling with composition in your landscape paintings? Composition is one of those things that comes up again and again, not knowing where to begin, feeling overwhelmed by a scene, not knowing how to arrange things so the painting actually works. So I'm sharing a free hour-long class I recorded live with a group of my painting students a couple of years ago. I walk through a collection of simple composition formulas that are easy to remember and easy to use in your own paintings, with lots of real examples throughout. Comment "COMPOSITION" below, and I'll send you the link. Happy painting, Sam P.S. Keep an eye out over the next few days. I've got something pretty exciting coming that I think a lot of you are going to love. More on that soon.

🎨 Do Your Paintings Look Flat? Here’s the 10-Minute Fix 👇
Hey Artists If your landscapes ever look flat, like they’re missing that sense of real distance, you’re not alone. Most artists try to fix it by adding more detail or doing a chalky glaze with titanium white, but that’s not the real problem. The issue is usually how you use tonal values and contrast, and once you fix that, everything changes. So I made a free 10-minute video that walks you through: 🎯 The simple 3-colour exercise that adds instant depth and realism 🎯 This exercise will help you quickly understand how to create atmospheric depth 🎯 How to make your paintings feel alive It’s short. It’s simple. And it works. 👇 Quick poll — be honest: Do your paintings ever feel a little flat? If you voted “Yes” or “Sometimes,” drop a comment that says “DEPTH” and I’ll send you the free video link right here in the group. Let’s make your next painting the one that stops people scrolling. 👊 Happy painting. Sam

Casein Test
I don't copy masters paintings to learn, but I do like to try to paint an original in the style of other artists. This is my attempt at a Mike Hernandez style gouache painting complete with opera pink toning of the paper. Although it's done in Casein instead of gouache, they act and look very similar. My other goal was to do it in less than 2 hours because I think this will be my medium of choice for Plein Air painting going forward. 6"x8" Casein on 300lb watercolor paper.

Nice work, I give you credit for trying these different techniques. Never attempted to paint that loose ,your painting turned out looking pretty good
Tooth 3
After a few months I revisited my tooth painting, just wasn’t happy with it. If you recall , this was about a scout trip we took in the mountains and I wanted it as a present to my son. Although he is happy with it, I wasn’t, so I took it back to try something different. This first is the new painting. I tried to improve depth and increase contrast as well as darkening and putting some movement in the sky. Changed the composition a bit too. Any thoughts?

Always liked nature and the outdoors and that’s what I like to paint and show in my paintings.
