Landscape oil on canvas
Another attempt at a landscape painting. I’m not quite sure yet if I like it… Do you think it might be too busy?

@Robert Reichard It’s an unedited photo (aside from cropping it). Here’s a photo of the same path from the opposite direction.

@Joe Taylor Hi Joe. Thank you very much! And also for the link to the very interesting video. I learned something new again!
A quiet moment
I have attached my latest painting, acrylic on canvas (400X300mm or 16X12inch) which is number 8 in a series of paintings I started in November 2025, when I started painting, that capture moments on the Camino Primativo in 2017. The location is Casa Meson Paradavella on 15 April 2017. My reference photo is on the left and my painting on the right. I am challenging myself with a larger canvas and more difficult subjects as well as with tonal values, hue and composition and depth and how to use a brush and which brush to use and so on and so on. The more I wrestle with the subject the more I actually observe in the original picture things I missed before. The picture is meaningful to me because of the memories it evokes. Thank you Sam for opening the door to this wonderful world of painting. Your online tutorials and methodology have unlocked a way of expressing myself that I may not have ventured into otherwise.

Very nicely painted! The only thing that immediately stood out to me is the face—it should be more in shadow because of the hat.
Struggling with composition? Here's a free lesson
Hey artists Are you struggling with composition in your landscape paintings? Composition is one of those things that comes up again and again, not knowing where to begin, feeling overwhelmed by a scene, not knowing how to arrange things so the painting actually works. So I'm sharing a free hour-long class I recorded live with a group of my painting students a couple of years ago. I walk through a collection of simple composition formulas that are easy to remember and easy to use in your own paintings, with lots of real examples throughout. Comment "COMPOSITION" below, and I'll send you the link. Happy painting, Sam P.S. Keep an eye out over the next few days. I've got something pretty exciting coming that I think a lot of you are going to love. More on that soon.

Composition
Cat. Oil on canvas
This is an older painting. I have a tendency to get lost in details, and simplifying is something I still struggle with.

This is painted using acrylics (most of them cheap) on acrylic paper, 9”x12”.

I've been painting for many years, mostly in oils. So far, I've painted mostly animal portraits. I'd like to learn to paint landscapes.
