Oilpainting
Hi, I’m currently working on the oil painting based on the color study. The tree on the right side of the image is meant to be a pollarded willow. I’m not quite sure about the color—it somehow looks a bit off to me. In the reference photo the tree appears brown-black because it’s backlit. Do you think I should maybe mix a bit of green into the brown? I’d really appreciate your thoughts.

@Loreen Pawlak Hi Loreen. I tried repainting the pollard willow with thinner branches, but it didn’t really improve the painting. So, following Robert’s suggestion, I’m going to remove the tree entirely. I’ll make a few more adjustments and then post the result. Thanks again for your help!😊

@Robert Reichard Good idea. The tree isn’t really needed anyway, since there’s already a darker one casting a shadow. I’ll remove the pollard willow – and I’m actually glad to get rid of it after changing it so many times. Thanks for the suggestion!

Clinton Gulch day 3 painting
Still have yet more to do. Please share thoughts about the added darks on the right side of the larger hill/mountain in back/right. Distracting or defining? The backmost mountain ridge and the tree-filled hills are unchanged. Any color differences is due to different lighting. Left photo is new; right is from day 2.

A very beautiful painting. To me, it looks even better now!
Colors
Hello everyone. I made a small color study here for an oil painting. Normally you shouldn’t just copy the colors from the reference photo but improve them. I find that quite difficult, though! Does anyone have suggestions for a more pleasing color harmony? I’d be happy to hear your ideas! 🎨

@Joe Taylor Hi Joe. That’s interesting, thanks! I’ll check it out.
On my easel. Started yesterday.
This is day 1 on this one. I always seem to bite off more than I can chew…but I loved this scene. I know I’ll be adding more paint…lighten it up with more highlights, refine some drawing. I used big brush on most of this so far. Any suggestions appreciated.

I've been painting for many years, mostly in oils. So far, I've painted mostly animal portraits. I'd like to learn to paint landscapes.
