ADHD + Reading = Obsession Anyone
Who else here is a full-blown reading addict?? I’ve realized something about myself.......I am 100% an “all or nothing” person. It’s in my DNA. Never done drugs, never smoked (not judging, just know myself)… because if I like something.......Oh, it’s game over..... Food...... I will eat the SAME thing every day for 6 months straight and then suddenly act like it personally offended me and never touch it again.... Rules that say “take no more than one”? Cool cool… I’ll take two just to see what happens. For science. Obviously. Then I found reading…And I was like ohhhhhh this is my new personality now..... The difference was, it wasn’t forced. No tests, no pressure. Just me choosing it. BUT… life got busy, and sitting down to read felt impossible. Enter: audiobooks here...... Now I can “read” while driving, cleaning, zoning out, avoiding responsibilities (you know… normal things). And when my brain gets loud or chaotic, I put a book on and it’s like everything just… quiets down..... Let the peace begin.... I get completely lost in it, and honestly......... Sometimes (alot of the time) that escape is exactly what I need. I’ll read/listen to anything—self-help, thrillers, romance, dark romance, fantasy… if it exists, I’ll try it at least once..... So I’m curious ( i think curious should be my middle name), does reading or listening to books help quiet your brain too? And what are you currently obsessed with?? Let’s talk books—I need new ones anyway!🤣

@John W Selleck I agree with you John. We do what we have to that makes sense for us. I have found the older I get, the more challenging it is for me to "read" an actual book (small print, dim lighting, etc). When I tried to minimize the challenges, it was inconistant. My using the kindle eliminated most of the obstacles for me, but also created new obstacles. Books don't run on energy while a Kindle has to be recharged. I still do have quite a few books, some that aren't on Kindle and some that have personal meaning to me (author signed, etc). I like the fact that we can make the choice to what serves us best.

@John W Selleck I understand John!
🙋‍♀️ Confession time, team...
How many times today have you started a sentence with "Sorry, but..." or "Sorry to bother you..." or my personal favourite, "Sorry, this might be a dumb question..."? Be honest. Count them. I'll wait. ☕ I caught myself apologising to my DOG yesterday for stepping over her. JAZ. She was asleep. She did not require an apology. So here's what I'm sitting with: is the "sorry" actually about something I did? Or is it a tiny insurance policy I'm taking out, just in case you might be annoyed, disappointed, or about to reject me? Quick poll, drop a number in the comments 👇 1️⃣ Less than 5 times a day (teach me your ways) 2️⃣ 5-10 times (relatable) 3️⃣ 10-20 times (👀) 4️⃣ I apologise for existing, next question And the bigger question - when you DO say sorry, is it for something you actually did? Or is it the people-pleaser running ahead of RSD, softening the ground before anyone has a chance to be unhappy with you? - What's your thoughts? Because I'm starting to think those two (Miss RSD and Miss People Pleaser) are holding hands behind our backs.

@Deb Brouwer I came to the same realization yesterday. I apologized for something that did not have anything to do with me. I have started editing my replies in my head before I verbalize. Still a work in progross, I am afraid.
Please be careful of Catfishing/Catphishing
Some random person reached out to me yesterday and asked how I was. What state they were from and where I was from. I related the state, but I’m cautious. She reached out again to me today to see how things were going and what I did for work?? Like that didn’t raise any flags. I do not know this person. To make sure she was who she said she was, I asked her what her favorite part of Session 1 was. She said she hadn’t quite finished yet. I asked a Mod to check to see, and they were not able to locate this individual. They were using Skool somehow to chat and they aren’t in level 3. I couldn’t see any level and they’ve had the account 2 days. if you don’t want to read all that, be careful. We are a new cohort, so some bad actors might try taking advantage of that. Be internet safe! Not an ADHD thing….well, yes it is. I’m too trusting and a people pleaser. SO even more so be cautious. I’m sorry I even had to post this. I felt it was the right thing to do. Enjoy session 2! Quick tip…somewhat their favorite part of the session was. If they tip toe around it, be cautious. It goes without saying, but we’re already watching each others backs and supporting each other and we just met. Some people will take advantage of that situation. Good night/morning, Shawn

@Shawn Bailey I call that "gut" feeling as the voice that loves us. If it feels off, your gut is usually correct. Great catch and I appreciate you sharing the info.
Transcript of Day 2 - The Invisible Mask
I created a transcript to share with the group because the Zoom transcription was very poor due to Jim's accent. I put this through ChatGPT so that I could have an accurate copy. I hope everyone finds it useful.

@Kathy Kubiak Thank you Kathy, I missed a few things and this helped me clarify and catch up!
Demoralized
Just finished all 3 sections of my ADHD Snapshot and realized something: I've been calling it a follow-through problem for years. Spent $150 on a fitness program, fell off, called myself demoralized. Turns out the strategies I keep using were never built for my brain. That reframe alone was worth showing up for.

@Matthew Stevens I agree! I have tried to be very selective in the classes and courses I take. I also have a "favorite" folder that I can go back to visit and see if the interest is still there.
