Breaking vendor contract
Hey everyone, we're looking to get out of a vendor contract because the current set-up that they have us enrolled under doesn't meet our needs. We could upgrade to meet our needs, but it's out of our budget. We feel like they did a bait and switch by not listening to our needs during the discovery and engagement phase then trailed us on the full program (which wasn't the one they set us on to use even though we expressed our needs in the software). I don't see any clauses in the agreement that says we can't break the contract, but would love to hear other's thoughts on the best way to break the contact.

Hi Tiffany, sorry to hear you feel you got hit with a bait and switch. Have you had any upfront conversations with the vendor informing them of this and asking them for a remedy? Possibly a free or discounted rate on the upgrade you need? Breaking contracts can cost you nothing or be a costly endeavor depending on how the vendor wishes to proceed and the value of the contract. I negotiate vendor contracts on behalf of my clients and would be happy to discuss your issue offline to see if I can offer some free advice. Feel free to email me [email protected] and we can coordinate something.
Workflow buy-in from Advisor and Operations Team
I'm struggling to get our team and advisor on board with using workflows. They are under the impression workflows are for bigger firms (we have 7 employees, which includes 2 advisors). They don't even want to entertain a conversation about how this could simplify repetitive tasks, keep everyone accountable and free up time instead of using several different spreadsheets, and then still have to be personally reminded about their tasks. HELP and thank you.

@Natalie Bergsma This is an excellent answer! It's definitely about resistance to change. Points 2 and 3 are fantastic perspective to consider. Instead of focusing on "getting them to use workflows" immediately, determine what's important to them and find something in an existing tool that doesn't require their active participation, but allows you to show some value related to the changes you're suggesting. You need momentum, then you can introduce the next item or a single workflow for one advisor to test. Your goal should be to cultivate an evangelist for the change you wish to implement. Don't stress about getting everyone on board with all the changes at once; you just need to introduce a drop of dye into the water, let it expand on its own. Focus on the items that deliver the results they would value, not necessarily the items you believe would be most beneficial. Over time you'll get the chance to implement those. If that doesn't work, outside help, in my very self-serving opinion (I'm an efficiency and tech consultant for RIAs) is a good route to consider. I'd be happy to take 30 minutes to help you try and find some ideas you could try on your own, based on the tools you have today and what you believe would be well received by the advisors.
Advyzon v. Black Diamond v. Tamarac
Greetings all! Our firm ($317M / 386 HHs) is considering a move away from Orion for a couple reasons: 1. This 8.9% upcharge for "out of pocket third-party expenses"; and 2. The platform is overkill for us - we use their Billing, Reports, Client Portal, Compliance, and Queries; and not much else. We use iRebal and Schwab Advisor Center for Rebalancing and Trading. In our due diligence, all three of Advyzon, BD, and Tamarac have seemingly better versions of all of those services. The big differences left are pricing and ease-of-use. Advyzon can replace both Orion and Redtail with their all-in-one platform - but will it be robust enough for us as we grow? (10%-15% per year) Black Diamond Reporting is very comprehensive and sleek, but we don't want to go back to Salesforce CRM. Tamarac has it all, but feels very similar to Orion and their CRM is more costly than Redtail. Will they be overkill for us as well? Is there anyone who has done this research already and made the move from Orion to any three of these other options? I'd like to know if you're satisfied with the move and if the transition was smooth. TIA!

@Teresa Burch, I'd love to hear more of your thoughts on some of the challenges your firm has had with Tamarac CRM. If you wouldn't mind sharing here, or we could schedule a few minutes. You can schedule a Zoom meeting from my LinkedIn page if that is preferred.
