MP 101 mixing project - key change issues
i'm doing the mix project for MP101. I am using raw vocals from my song that hs been prodcued already and recreating it as an acoustic mix (4 acoustics, 1 Lead Vocal). I have done a volume mix, and I've completed vocal dynamic gain staging. The problem before even getting to using compression / limiing etc, is that the key change after the bridge for th exit chorus is a bit of a belter. She's end nearly end of range in her vocals, but very consistent. It sounds "loud" but it isnt peaking at -14 dbs in the master bus just like the earlier choruses. Shes stepped away from ht emic, I guess. I cannot get it to it nicer into the mix now and it seems too different to the rest of the sections, louder (her effort/performance), but objectively quieter roughly same as other sectionsm- but just seems to drop lower than the other sections. are there any specific elements and techniques i need to consider for key changes when gain staging vocal dynamics and volume mixing - i did the volume mix first (as per videos) but I think ding vocals first might feel right for me - i guess it doesn matter? original production here: https://s.disco.ac/kmpgoyoisdgm and my mix is attached (eek, its bad - lol) thanks for any help

Hi and Happy New Year everyone. I'm Gareth in West Wales. I write songs in all genres with different songwriters and I want to improve production and mixing to communicate my ideas with producers and songwriters more clearly. Doing the membership route for now. Happy to share knowledge from my experiences with writing with singers and artists - the one thing / mantra I learned even before I learned basic production is "rehearse, rehearse, rehearse" to make sure you get the best performance recorded (for live instruments) and get your signal right at the source - its so important. Using VSTs has been a great way to expand my band when I'm short on human friends to play the parts I hear ;)
Music Production 101 Project
With the help of the Mastering club and VIP access I completed My First Ever Project. I could have kelp tweaking and over thinking then it hit me, and you said release it or I may be working on it forever. So, hear it is. Let me what you think. Enjoy!!

I thought the bass sounded pretty good Steve unless that was the newer one? Cool sax which was also competing with the vocals a little in some parts, but I it had a late 80s vibe I liked. I'm just starting the mixing project, and I'm cheating a bit as I produced a track last year and had it professionally mixed. I never liked the vocal mix, but I have all the dry tracks that I thought I'd give it a go using the pro mix as a reference :s I'll share once ive done - probably by 2027 lol

Im on dynamics of Mixing in Prod' 101. Getting a bit confused about why limiters and compression and clipping are switched in order in the chain, for example the bass (and why the limiter is in the process as I thought it was mastering only), but the order in mastering is typically clip / compress (some don't use it as its in individual tracks), and limits. I appreciate mixing and mastering achieve two different things - but I guess if it sounds great to the ears and is publishable to industry standard does it matter ? ;)
MP 101 Mastering assignment
I hope someone can help me out. When working on the mastering assignment I cannot really see the changes I make with EQ on the PAZ Analyzer. I have the PAX on the trackt as well as the reference (after the EQ. After making EQ changes (small or big) I don't see it reflected ont e PAZ. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Thanks in advance!

well @Anthony B I made a mess of the mastering 101 assignment! I was n't sure which order to put the processing chain, but learned the most common way is initial EQ (which I assume is the matching the reference), then compression, clipping, limiting. The problem was that there was cumulative processing so by the time I got to the limiter it was already a mess! I reset everything and started with the limiter at the recommended settings then restarted the process, I just couldn't get it sounding decent. Having said that, the reference and final mix were quite similar at start anyway with the exception of a low and high end drop off in the final mix. The LMF to HMF all seemed similar at the sections I used to practice! So my question - finally - did you use just a section of the song e.g. loudest / chorus or did you loop the whole song and work while it was playing through?

@Garry Simmons brilliant, thanks, Gary. I was starting to move towards less is more approach which will be useful to keep in mind as a beginner. I had already begun to think about multiple instances of compression on individual tracks and how they all affect the final master bus etc, too. I think, though, most importantly I understand the principles for now and what they're doing even I cannot fully comprehend how they interact together for the moment. thanks for your time and advice
