Author Illustrator Advice
Hello fellow creatives, I am looking to get advice from those of you who may be author illustrators. I so far have only been an illustrator. I do have plenty of books written and ready to be edited, but unfortunately, I am dreading illustrating my own book. Lol. What is your process after you spend so much time writing? Do you feel like doing your illustrations or do you have to wait for some time to start them? I have to continuously tell myself to take my time but currently I’m in this big writing sprint where book ideas just keep coming to me and I just keep writing. Unfortunately, I haven’t sat down to actually take the character moodboards I’ve made to make the character. 🤣 Any process advice? Do you write first and illustrate after sending to your editor? Do you wait until finalizing things with your editor? Have you created some sort of a brand vibe for your book? TIA, ET

@Hannah Janeth thank you! I totally understand and that helps a bunch. 🙂 I don’t know what the hesitation is outside of the fact that I am in a generative writing state right now and I don’t want to lose that lol. A lot of illustrations come to me as I write so I start with those notes once I finalize the text layout. I think it’s also my drawing process too. I just have to learn how to streamline that process more so that I don’t take so long drawing.
Something new is coming Monday! 🎧
I’ve been working on something behind the scenes for a little bit now, and I’m honestly so excited to finally share it with you… This Monday, I’m launching my brand new podcast!!! It’s called Children’s Book Marketing Made Easy, and you’ll be able to listen to it on the go wherever you normally listen to your podcasts. The link to the first 3 episodes will be posted here on Monday! I seriously can't wait to share this with you.

Cover feedback
Hey eveyone, what do we think of the cover? I feel like something is still not 100%. I was thinking when I print it to have the Cosmos Adventures as foil, or UV Spot. Anyways let me know your thoughts on how I can improve it. Thanks!

Love it!
Book Format
I have been creating books in an 8.5 X 11 format. With the illustration spanning both pages. I also have the text over the illustrations. I am exploring other formats. What formats do you use? Do you use different formats for each book?

I think it depends on how you visualize things. So far I’ve done illustrations for 2 7x10 in books. For chapter books or children’s books, illustrations that are half pages or spot can work too. I’ve done half illustrations and text on the other page. The page with text will have a light pattern that compliments the book topic. For example, one I did for a client was about school so the half page was full of color and drawings but the text page had a light notebook paper background with an apple and the page number. I think I will do my book as a square or 7x10 maybe. I liked my thumbnails as a square though lol. I will have spot illustrations and doodle elements so that it can have a journal/scrapbook vibe. The text will have to be fun you know? If it helps, when I built my children’s book library I intentionally got books that inspired me from like goodwill or something and then I looked up their sizes to see how I’d like mine. Technically you can use any book you have at home but it made things easier for me to understand. So I wrote the sizes on sticky notes and I place them in the book so I can put the size I think it should be. I’m just a visual person
Pen Name Advice
Does anyone have advice on pen names? I’m a bit torn currently because I actually go by my middle name as my first and last name are common. I could use my middle name but unfortunately it’s spelled like wine and so I don’t know if that’s fitting for a children’s book. I have also thought of making a publishing company name but idk I’m over-researching and digesting content 🤣
