Flatten or Unfold?
What is the difference between "Flatten" and "Unfold"? What are the applications, goal and results?

I tried convert to Sheet metal at first but found it was easier to build my part using Sheetmetal to start with... Reason I ask is because I need to send my part to be laser cut and did not know if I should use Flatten or Unfold. It appears Flatten is the best because it makes the whole part flat and Unfold seems to target specific bends for drawing purpose. So many featrures in this software, it's unreal!

Indeed Jesse, 2nd option is exactly what I did, now waiting for the laser people to get back to me!

Drawing in assembly - reference issue
I need to understand the correct process of drawing in assemblies and modifying assemblies. I have issues with features being defined "in the context" of an assembly and this prevents me from editing a part... A) Here is the way that I have been proceeding: 1) I make an assembly 2) I modiffy a part using "Open Part", rebuilt, save the part under the same name, close the part - return to assembly B) On other occasions, I modify the part outside of the assembly, like when I decide to make a major modification instead of a small adjustments, I then proceed this way: 1) Open my assembly click on "Replace Components" 2) Select new component, rebuild and save new assembly under new name C) Also, on some occasions, I used the "Convert Entities" to transfer a sketch from one component to another, mainly to transfer hole locations for bolts. Now things got more complicated here, it looks like SW is keeping references from other assemblies into new ones... Look closely at pictures 2 and 3, I was trying to use "Convert Entities" to place a hole onto another part and see the error message that I get... I am totally unable to select the hole to do a "Convert Entities" into a new sketch, in the same way I did the first one... So it looks like I am proceeding wrongly when editing my parts and assemblies... What process should I follow or avoid when modifying parts in assemblies? Any special care when converting entities? What do you guys do? I am sure sophisticated assemblies must have some kind of process to avoid getting into the situation that I am in... Also, look at the 4th picture, why are there those component's name additions at the end of the component's name... (Sorry, my SW is in English but somehow some things keep showing in French... translation of the name extension tags would be something like "Default" "State of Label 1 >"...) Eric

Well at least it's not obvious! Thanks Jesse! I kinda worked around it but I just wish I had some kind of process in my head to avoid this... I kinda feel I am subject to this happening again... It's kinda the same issue that I was struggling with at the part level, and now at the assembly level, which is how to structure the drawings...

@Jannie Smal Hi Jannie, see the picture at the bottom of my reply, this is how I keep track of the modifications that I do. This is very simple because I am a one person team! I put my assembly in a dedicated folder and use "Save as" and give it another name which is simply changing the "v number" after the name of the assembly, like v2... v3... v4 etc... Then I add a short description of the modification after the "V number". As I explained at the beginning, sometimes I modify a component WITHIN an assembly using "Open part" or "Edit part". When I do that I usually do not change the component name or the assembly name. I just save the component and rebuiild the assembly and keep all the same names, this is when I need to correct minor issues. However, when I add a component to the assembly or make a major change to a component, then I rebuilt the assembly and save to a new name describing the change some... As you can see by the names, I got a bit better at it. Now I found that changing the name of the assembly, or the name of the modified component may cause some issues, like the one that I describe at the beginning of this thread. My undestanding is that when you draw on a part WITHIN an asssembly, that drawing keeps that relation as a reference much like a fillet on an edge or a mirror... I did not answer your question at first because I though you wanted to use a feature of SW that allows to track the history of changes on a assembly or part, like I believe Jesse is discussing. Imagine a large number of drafters working on their own components of an assembly, there has to be a way to track everything for sure. I kinda like the way Jesse is showing because it makes the assembly totally independent. However, if I wanted to go back, let's say to my version 7 of my assembly, and "Branch off" of that one to make a different path, all I would have to do is reopen that one and proceed. But again, one may run into lost references...
Excellent Progress In Few Days
Hello everyone , i am just showing you the progress i have been achiving thanks to the course, i just have 1 week of work in the course , and i already have a great advance in my skills using solidworks , i have never been in any 3D Cad program before , and this course is giving me all i need to take my first steps in SOLIDWORKS. I was able to copy one of the example pieces without having the drawings , is not an exact copy, but it shows how much i have been progressing since i started and i didn't have no knowledge of the program. Orange pieces are the ones used as examples in the videos and the gray ones are mine

Level 3 Tutorial Posted! - The Game 2025-01
THE NEXT GAME HAS STARTED! CLICK HERE TO GO PLAY!!! [EDIT (final) Feb 11] All done šŸ’Æ I have added a tutorial file in PDF for anyone who wants to try this. It took me a looooong time and it is the first time I have ever done a full tutorial so please give it a try and let me know what you think. I added the PDF to this post and it is down in the replies as well. [EDIT Feb 05] Okay we are pretty much done. Just waiting on me to write up the results and post them here. I am slow though, so please go ahead and keep trying it if you like. For anyone who is all finished, - have you tried making one with hundreds of holes, like speaker grille? - How could you parametrically link the size of the holes to the number of holes, so that they always adjust to fit without destroying the structure? The answers to all your questions .... Soonā„¢ [EDIT Feb 02] After Aryan posted his submission I found a couple more problems with the drawing and my actual master file (big surprise 😬) so I have updated the drawing with some scribbles. Should not change too much but if i caused anyone pain im terribly sorry. [EDIT - I think this will be the last level for this model, as I have ideas for different ones already, so EVERYone give it a try if you want. What is a master's way? ] Shouting out the recent forum illuminati to come drop some knowledge @Eric Nadeau @Duff Emediong @Naval Kishore Singal @David Roy @Zacharias Kourelis @Romit Makwana @Jn Barbacena @Sohaib Ahmed @Jonathan Florez , and of course @Avito Lourenco and @Aryan Fallahi

I will make a suggestion here, I would like to participate but I have so many parts to do on my project that I have to focus on that. Would it be possible to create a section in the beginner course to store this "challenge" so that people could go there later? I certainly would like to. I am afraid it will become hard to find and follow in the community section. Thanks Jesse!
