AI Governance — Let’s Talk About Getting This Right
We’re all building fast. But we’re not having the right conversation at the same speed. Here’s the question: What if AI governance didn’t start with companies or governments…but with the individual? A different starting point: 1. Personal Guardian LayerEvery person has a private AI that: - protects their data - acts in their interest - controls how external systems interact with them No silent access. No hidden extraction. 2. Departments of Life (baseline for humanity)Before innovation, before profit: - Housing - Water - Power - Healthcare - Education These aren’t luxuries. They’re the foundation. What if governance ensured these first—globally, transparently? 3. Open Standards, Not Closed Systems Instead of competing in silos: - shared protocols - transparent operations - auditable systems Companies still innovate—but on top of a trusted, open foundation. 4. Distributed Oversight No single authority. Governance includes: - technical experts - medical + legal - lived experience (this part is missing today) Multiple perspectives. Shared responsibility. 5. Contribution Over Control People choose how they contribute: - build - create - support - explore Some go big. Some live simple. Both are valid. The shift: This isn’t about removing success, money, or ambition. It’s about asking: What if no one had to struggle for the basics…and everything else was built on top of that stability? AI is the first tool we’ve had that could actually help coordinate something like this. So the real question is: Are we building systems that compete for control…or systems that coordinate for humanity? I’m not claiming to have the full answer. But I do think this is the conversation we should be having—together. What am I missing?

It's an interesting point about the AI governance of the individual - however it's a bit paternalistic and might also break the law. I work in social care with fairly independent clients - if they are deemed to have capacity, this also includes the right to make unwise and risky decisions and the law says they have the freedom to do so. It can be painful standing on the sides lines watching this - how far would an AI go? Similarly controlling external systems interaction for a client might run into the same ground/ classed as a digital barrier that's some sort of restrictive barrier. But in general I work with people with learning disabilities who can't read and write, that already use gemini AI to send texts to me, they've also told me how to use musical AI apps they use on TV for the benefit of my education! So in general an AI with an practical application to make sense of letters and bills which alarm a number of my clients would be great.
Leveraging AI to Improve Education
It is absolutely imperative that we recognize that A I is going to change the future. It is essential that men and women of faith and character engage this technology and direct its ethical use for the benefit of mankind, for without people of character the vacuum will be filled by nefarious actors who don’t have good intentions. Be part of the solution!

Hello Brother David, I completely agree that there needs to be an ethical framework for AI - look at the latest AI model that Anthropic built is considered to be very dangerous and without guard rails - literally proving to be a threat to the world. It's something for the whole world to agree on, it's impact is that profound. I don't believe that its simply down to nefarious actors, but that there can't be a wild west attitude to the race to develop AI - humanity needs to be protected and more importantly some of the poorest constitencies of the world should not be left behind. It could bring so many benefits. AI is just a tool - it reflects the "souls" of its makers - for instance there are wonderful applications in medical science. But at the moment, it's just a race towards trillion dollar profits, taken up by a few - who have taken their eyes off humanity.

Really interesting comments, Libia and Tonny. Bluntly, if the benefits of AI are only captured by a few people who write the rules for it, then most people who are left behind, will get very angry and the system will break down - hearts and minds need to be won here. AI is a just a tool and it reflects the "souls" of its makers - ordinary people need to have access and see its benefits - to have their say in designing it and what it does. AI tools can help clear up the oceans, find hidden patterns of cancer cells in scans and help small hold farmers in Africa - AI currently does what people tell it to do - all these changes reflect how people have chosen to run things - we all need to "choose" a better future. This is potentially a fantastic age of technology and science but look who's in the drivers seat?
Think
You are all some of the most capable people using this new technology - but it can't just be about the winner takes it all - AI is a tool, we have a choice about how we can use it to make lives better and to make sure that no one if left behind in the race to control the world's information. It's not just a multi-trillion dollar compettion for a few individuals and companies. It could empower and enhance the lives of ordinary people, if you dare to go there in your imagination!

I passionately believe in the power of education and I would like to learn to use AI to empower and reach the people I work with in social care.
