Employment is not a condition for nikāḥ
Shaykh Aḥmad al-Najmī رحمه الله was asked: Question: “The questioner says, ‘I am a young man who wants to propose to a young girl and she is from our tribe. However her father, Allāh preserve him, rejected that with the argument that I do not have employment and I do not have a specific amount of money going into the marriage. What do you advise me? Allāh reward you.” Answer: “In reality, the people in this time have become attached to employment. It has become the most important thing to them. Provisions are upon Allāh, the Exalted. This is especially so if you have the physical capability [to earn], a yearning for marriage, and your father is hastening to marry you off. That which I see is that it should not prevent you and perhaps you will find employment afterwards or some freelance work by which Allāh will provide for you.”
Imām al-Awzāʿī رحمه الله said:
I met people who used to save their needs until the Day of ʿArafah, so they could ask Allāh for them on that day. And one of them used to say: 'For fifty years I have been making duʿāʾ on the Day of ʿArafah, and never has a year passed without me seeing my duʿāʾs answered as clearly as the break of dawn.' [Laṭāʾif al-Maʿārif (pg. 494)]

Struggling?
The Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ said: “Strive to do that which will benefit you, and seek the help of Allāh, and do not feel helpless.” [Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (4816)] He ﷺ also said: “If you were to rely upon Allāh with the reliance He is due, you would be given provision like the birds; they go out hungry in the morning and come back with full bellies in the evening.” [Sunan al-Tirmidhī (2344)]

The balance between seeking ʿilm and earning a living
Shaykh ʿUbayd al-Jābirī رحمه الله was asked: “How can a person find the opportunity to acquire knowledge and become deeply rooted in it, along with obtaining provision and a livelihood. How is he able to combine between the two?” The shaykh responded: “He strikes a balance. He makes an effort to seek the permissible provision for himself and those he is responsible for. And it is not permissible for him to neglect them. And he strives to set aside a time to sit with the people of knowledge around him. And from the examples from the people of character, who must be taken as role models; is what was done by ʿUmar رضي الله عنه. He and his neighbour used to take turns sitting with the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ. ʿUmar would sit with him one day and then bring the information of the Nabī ﷺ to his neighbour. Then his neighbour would go the next day and bring the information of the Nabī ﷺ to ʿUmar; Allāh be pleased with him and his neighbour. Thus if you are able to do that, do so. And if you are not able, then do what you are able to even if it is one hour during the week, or two hours. Strike a balance, and strive to put aside for yourself and those who you are responsible for that which free you from needing the sustenance from the people.”
